The time is 2:45. Not more than a minute after the final classroom bell of the day, Academic Team members have already begun to flock into the practice room ready to put the grades and the assignments of the regular school day behind them and get down to business in furthering academic excellence beyond classroom scores and class rankings. This is the sight I experience as an Academic Team coach each afternoon from August until May. There is no substitute for the enthusiasm and joy displayed in taking part in something that makes students feel better about themselves as students and as people in the world at large.

The Academic Team at ACHS has a phrase that we have adopted as a credo since I have been a coach: "In the end, there might be trophies and medals, there are certainly going to be both wins and losses, but the goal of what we do is to become better than who you are right at this moment." It is that mentality that has taken our teams consistently to the top of what they do. It is not about putting a mark on another team; it is about recognizing what we need to learn and what we need to do in order to get better at the things we want to excel at academically. And that's exactly what is on the minds of these students when they enter the practice room at the end of a regular school day. Beyond enthusiasm, there are also no words to describe what it is like to see students year in and year out discover and have an in-depth understanding about something that they did not have before.

The accomplishments and records of our team have been recorded in the media in the past. The team cannot grow and cannot achieve without the ability to operate financially as a team. These are just the facts of life as a functioning Academic Team. Just like it is a reward to see a student achieve something that he/she could not do at one point in the past, it is equally disappointing to have to tell a student that we cannot continue to go to a meet or to a high level event that they have earned because the finance well has gone dry for the year. All too often, this is a reality that our team has had to face.

As we come to the closing of our school year and academic season, we are seeking support from the community to help the team continue the successes that have been started. Donations are always welcome from the community as we near the end of 2015-2016, and we are reaching out to those who have helped us in the past and welcome those that feel compelled to help us out for the first time. If you would like to assist in the day-to-day, year-long efforts to keep our county's Academic Team success going, you can send donations to Adair County Academic Team, 526 Indian Dr, Columbia, KY 42728.

We thank the community for the kind words and the encouragement and the support over the course of our long stretch of success. It is great to be out in town and in the county and have so many of you recognizing the team's achievements and passing along your best wishes for the team moving forward. The drive that this instills within our students is as prominent today as it ever was and is often a discussion point at practices and events. Our students are proud to represent their home county and their home communities, and we thank you all.

Sincerely,

- Brett Reliford
