No. 24 LWC baseball sweeps Cumberland on Sunday

Wins 8-2 and 6-2, to win weekend three game series

COLUMBIA, KY - (Sun 10 Apr 2016) - The 24th-ranked Lindsey Wilson baseball team snapped their five-game losing streak on Sunday as they swept Cumberland (Tenn.), 8-2 and 6-2, at Egnew Park.

Edgar Lebron led the Blue Raiders (28-16, 9-6 Mid-South Conference) going 4-for-7 at the plate with two RBIs and four runs scored. Aaron Ashton went 2-for-5 on the day, with both hits coming in the second game and Ashton's two RBIs also came in the second half of the doubleheader.



Game 1 - Lindsey Wilson 8, Cumberland 2

Cumberland (25-19, 8-7 MSC) threatened to take the early lead in the second inning, but they left two runners on base to cap off the top of the second inning.

Lindsey Wilson started the scoring in the third inning with one run. After the Blue Raiders started the inning with two quick outs, but Edgar Lebron doubled to centerfield. Brandon Munoz was able to drive in Lebron with a single up the middle, which gave Lindsey Wilson a 1-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Phoenix answered with one run to make it a 1-1 ball game.

The Blue Raiders broke the game open in the sixth inning as they scored five runs in the inning. Lebron hit a solo homerun with one out in the inning to start the Lindsey Wilson run. Munoz followed with another single up the middle and after a balk from the Cumberland pitcher, Munoz was able to move up to second.

Aaron Ashton and Austin Atwell each earned a walk to load the bases for the Blue Raiders. Jan Carlos Ortiz delivered a single through the left side of the infield to score Munoz from third base. Miguel Reyes then reached base on a fielder's choice after the ball was hit back to the pitcher's mound. Cumberland tried to get the force out at home, but a wild throw allowed Ashton and Atwell to score on the play.

Alec Salcedo bunted for a base hit down the first base line and he was able to drive in Ortiz to close out the scoring in the sixth inning.

The Phoenix looked to work their way back into the game as they were able to score once in the seventh inning.

The Lindsey Wilson offense took advantage of two Cumberland errors in the home half of the seventh inning. Jayden Jackson reached base on an error and after being lifted for a courtesy runner, Caleb Ratzman moved up to second base on a passed ball. In an attempted sacrifice bunt, Lebron reached base on another error from the Phoenix, which allowed Ratzman to score and Lebron moved to second base.

Lebron advanced to third base after a ground out and the Phoenix intentionally walked Ashton to put runners on the corners with one out. Atwell sent a single to right field to score Lebron as the Blue Raiders took an 8-2 lead.

James Doubet pitched the final two innings to close the door on the Phoenix and secured the 8-2 victory for Lindsey Wilson.

Aaron Doughty (4-4) picked up the win on the mound as he pitched seven innings allowing two runs -- one earned -- on six hits, while striking out five batters. Doubet allowed just one hit in his two innings of work.

Game 2 - Lindsey Wilson 6, Cumberland 2

Cumberland came out of the gate strong to start the second game as they scored two runs with one out in the inning to take a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

After Lebron earned a leadoff walk for the Blue Raiders to start the bottom of the first inning, he was able to steal second base with one out in the inning to put himself into scoring position. Lebron moved to third base after a pickoff attempt from the Phoenix catcher sailed into centerfield.

Ashton delivered a single through the left side of the infield to score Lebron at cut the Lindsey Wilson deficit to one run.

The Blue Raiders were able to take the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. Ortiz started the inning with a triple down the right field line and Salcedo drove in Ortiz with a single up the middle, which tied the game, 2-2.

Ryan Harper laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Salcedo up to second base. Jackson then followed with a single to left and Salcedo was able to score on the play. Ratzman executed another sacrifice bunt for Lindsey Wilson, which moved Reyes -- who courtesy ran for Jackson -- up to second base. Lebron drove the final run of the inning for the Blue Raiders as he singled through the left side of the infield to score Reyes.

With Lindsey Wilson leading 4-2 heading into the sixth inning, the Blue Raiders were able to add a pair of insurance runs. With one out in the inning, Jackson was walked and they lifted for a courtesy runner as Ray Gonzales came into run at first base. Gonzales moved up to second base after a passed ball and the Ratzman was hit by pitch to put runners at first and second base with one out in the inning.

Lebron loaded the bases for Lindsey Wilson as he reached on an infield single. Munoz singled to right field to score Gonzales as the bases remained loaded for the Blue Raiders. Ashton sent a single to right-centerfield to score Ratzman and put Lindsey Wilson ahead, 8-2.

Sam Ross who came in at the beginning of the sixth inning, was able to get the final six outs for the Blue Raiders to secure the 8-2 victory for Lindsey Wilson.

Tyler Russell (5-2) got the win on the mound for the Blue Raiders after he allowed two runs on seven hits over five innings of work. Both runs allowed by Russell came in the first inning of the game. Ross picked up his first save of the season as he pitched the final two innings of the game allowing just one walk.

With the two wins on Sunday, Lindsey Wilson moves into a tie for second place in the Mid-South Conference standings with Pikeville (KY) as both teams sit at 9-6 in the conference. Campbellsville (KY) leads the MSC with a record of 10-5.
