LWC Softball gets pair of wins over Georgetown

COLUMBIA, Ky. - The ninth-ranked Lindsey Wilson softball team moved to second place in the Mid-South Conference standings as they swept the doubleheader against Georgetown (KY), 9-0 and 10-9, on Friday at Lindsey Wilson Park.



The Blue Raiders (26-10, 11-3 MSC) hit six home runs over the two games against the Tigers (19-13, 10-4 MSC). Amber Foukes went 2-for-5 on the day with four RBIs and a pair of home runs. Amanda McIver hit both of her home runs on the day in the second game, while she went 4-for-6 with three RBIs on the day.

Game 1 - Lindsey Wilson 9, Georgetown 0

The Blue Raiders got off to a strong start in the first game as they loaded the bases with one out in the first inning. Bailey Mize earned a walk to bring in the first run of the game for Lindsey Wilson. Amanda McIver followed with a single through the right side to score Callum Pilgrim and Sydney Fourman scored after wild throw from the Tiger right fielder.

With one out in the first inning, the Blue Raiders looked to add on to their lead with runners on first and second base, but Georgetown ended the inning with a double play.

In the fourth inning, McIver hit a single to shallow left field with one out in the inning and Foukes followed with a two-run home run over the left field fence to put Lindsey Wilson up 5-0.

To start the bottom of the fifth inning Jenna Firestein reached on an infield single and Cassie Kooker delivered a single that scooted past the Georgetown second basemen. On Kooker's single another errant throw from the Tigers allowed Firestein to score and Kooker was able to move all the way to third base.

After the Blue Raiders had two outs in the inning, Fourman singled to deep left-centerfield to score Kooker from third base. Mize ended the game with a two-run home run to centerfield as Lindsey Wilson picked up a 9-0 victory.

Casey Bryan (11-6) earned the win in the circle pitching all five innings allowing just three hits, while striking out three batters in the game.

Game 2 - Lindsey Wilson 10, Georgetown 9

After a leadoff double from Chaselyn Allgeier, she was able to score later in the inning after the Tigers earned a bases loaded walk. Georgetown could not add on to their lead in the first inning as they left the bases loaded.

Firestein started the home half of the first inning with a double to left-centerfield. A sacrifice bunt from Kooker moved Firestein over third base with one out in the inning. Pilgrim was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and third base and Fourman hit a fly ball to left field that was caught for an out and Firestein looked tag up, but she was caught in a run down. Firestein avoided a tag from the catcher as she scored to the game, 1-1.

In the second inning, McIver started the inning with a solo home run and just one batter later Abbi Goedde hit a solo home run to give the Blue Raiders a 3-1 lead. Lindsey Wilson looked break open the game, but they left the bases loaded to end the inning.

Georgetown countered in the top of the third inning as Rachel Simms hit a two-run home run out to left field to tie the game, 3-3.

Lindsey Wilson regained the lead in the bottom of the third inning as McIver hit her second home run of the game as the Blue Raiders grabbed a 4-3 lead. In the fourth inning, the Tigers tied the game once again as they executed a sacrifice squeeze play to score Chelsea Osborn from third base.

After the Blue Raiders were held scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning, Georgetown continued their strong performance at the plate as they scored four runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-4 lead.

The Lindsey Wilson offense continued to chip away at their deficit as Mize delivered a one out double and with two outs in the inning, Foukes hit a two-run home run to centerfield to bring the Blue Raiders back within two runs. Lindsey Wilson looked to work their way back into the game, but they left two runners on base at the end of the inning.

The Blue Raiders continued to cut into their deficit as Kooker singled down the left field line and after Pilgrim reached on an error from the Tigers, Kooker moved up to third base. Kooker scored later in the inning after Mize drove her in on a fielder's choice hit to the Georgetown shortstop.

To start the seventh inning, the Tigers had two back-to-back singles and they later loaded the bases with one out in the inning. Georgetown was able to add an insurance run in the inning after a high throw from Lyndsey Parden pulled Morgan Howard off home plate allowing the runner from third base to score. The Tigers were unable to add on to their lead as they left the base loaded to end the inning.

In the home half of the seventh inning, Foukes led off the inning with a walk and Goedde was able to reach on an error that placed runners on second and third base with no outs. Rogers came into pinch run for Goedde to represent the tying run.

Howard sent a single out to left field to score Foukes and Rogers slid in under the tag at home plate to tie the game at 9-9. After Howard advanced to second on the throw, she was lifted for pinch runner, Natalie Bertram. Firestein moved Bertram over to third base with a sacrifice bunt and Pilgrim drove in Bertram with a fielder's choice to second base, to give the Blue Raiders a 10-9 victory.

Parden (14-3) picked up the win a she pitched the first three and 1/3 innings and she came back in during the seventh inning to get the last three outs of the game. In the four and 1/3 innings of work, Parden allowed four runs on five hits, while posting five strikeouts.

Bryan pitched one inning in the second game allowing four runs - two earned - on two hits, while Emily Gray pitched one and 2/3 innings giving up just one unearned run on three hits.

With the two wins on Friday, Lindsey Wilson now takes over sole possession of second place in the Mid-South Conference standings with a record of 11-3 as they move past Georgetown, who now sits in third place.
