Nazario, Mendez get MSC athlete honors

By Charlie Balcom

Lindsey Wilson's Victor Nazario is the Mid-South Conference Baseball Player of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.

The senior outfielder went 7-for-10 at the plate while helping Lindsey Wilson to a 3-1 record during the week. Along with hitting .700, he posted a slugging percentage of 1.200 and drove in three runs.

The Sabana Grande, Puerto Rico native went 7-for-8 in a doubleheader against Cumberlands (Ky.) on Saturday. Nazario went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a triple, scoring once and recording one RBI in the Blue Raiders' 7-4 victory over the Patriots.

In the nightcap, he went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, scoring once as the Blue Raiders won 11-10.

Lindsey Wilson is now 25-10 on the season and in first place in the MSC standings with a 7-2 conference record.

Nazario earns his first player of the week honor this season and the first of his career. He becomes the fourth different Blue Raider to earn the conference weekly award, joining teammates Jan Carlos Ortiz, Miguel Reyes and Fabian Chirino.

Tennis Player of the Week

Raul Mendez has been named the Mid-South Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.

Mendez won three singles matches at the No. 2 singles position and partnered with teammate Denis Porcic to claim three doubles wins in the top-seeded doubles match last week.

The senior from Mexico City, Mexico helped No. 7-ranked Lindsey Wilson to wins over No. 13-ranked Reinhardt (Ga.), No. 23 Asbury (Ky.) and No. 22 Cumberland (Tenn.) during the week.

Mendez won all three singles matches in straight sets and dropped just 10 total games in his three doubles wins.

Mendez improves to 5-4 this season in singles play and 6-3 in doubles with the wins.

He picks up his second weekly award of the season and third of his career, earning the honor earlier this season on March 14.
