THE CUT: a northern Metcalfe County, KY wonder By Linda Waggener The Cut, as it is called by locals, was created around Civil War time as near as folklore of the region can tell. It is located in what was once a thriving little community known as Rockland Mills on the banks of the South Fork of the Little Barren River, just a couple of miles from Beechville and part of the greater Knob Lick, KY community. As a child of northern Metcalfe County KY, I played there often. Best friend Faye Lambirth grew up less than a mile from The Cut, while I lived a distant four or five miles away nearer to Sulphur Well. In our visits at her house we would sometimes go to The Cut. As a teenager, it was a fun place to hike with friends. Then when I became the mother of two boys, it was a great place to take them to explore. Now that they have families of their own, they share it with their children and the legend passes on. The Cut's reason for being has been studied and speculated about for as many years as I can remember. Some say that it was drilled out of the hillside so that in flood times the water could get into the cropland on the opposite side of the river. With the bridge where it's at today, however, it seems that would have been completely unnecessary because the water could have spread into those same fields at the point where the road and bridge are now. So it's still speculated about to this day. In the meantime it remains an incredible wonder with a mysterious background and just a small part of the unique history of Metcalfe County KY.
