Robert Stone: Villanelle for Good Friday

Villanelle for Good Friday
by Robert Stone
All sin who live on earth each day
But those have hope whose faith is strong
Christ died to wash our sins away.

For did not Eve to Adam say
To eat of Knowledge is not wrong
All sin who live on earth each day.

To save the man of sinful clay
To save the wicked, godless throng
Christ died to wash our sins away.

Who follows sin and goes astray
To Satan surely does belong
All sin who live on earth each day.

But for our scarlet sins to pay
Christ felt the sting of the thorn's prong
And died to wash our sins away.

And now we can to Jesus pray
And to him sing each day a song
For all sin who live on earth each day
But Christ died to wash our sins away.
- Robert Stone, August 19, 1956
