LWC Women's Basketball season sends at Quarterfinal level

Lindsey Wilson Women's Basketball's season ends with 60-44 loss to MidAmerica Nazarene in NAIA National Quarterfinals. It has been a fabulous season, with the most wins in a single season in program history, while making the program's first-ever appearance in the national quarterfinals.

INDEPENDENCE, MO - The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team saw their season finally come to end on Saturday night as the Blue Raiders fell 60-44 to MidAmerica Nazarene (KS) in the quarterfinals of the 2016 NAIA Division I Women's Basketball National Championship Tournament, held at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.

The fifth-seeded Blue Raiders (28-7) were unable to pull off an upset for the third night in a row as Lindsey Wilson turned in a season-low 44 points in the loss to the second-seeded Pioneers (30-5).

In the program's first-ever national quarterfinals appearance, No. 18-ranked Lindsey Wilson was unable to overcome a dismal first-half shooting performance, falling to 5-11 all time at the national tournament.

It was a slow start to the game for both teams as Lindsey Wilson led 2-0 over three minutes into the game. The Blue Raiders started the game 3-for-9 from the field while MidAmerica Nazarene started 1-for-8.

But the Pioneers began to turns things around as the Blue Raiders' struggles continued from the floor. Trailing 6-4, MidAmerica Nazarene went on an 11-0 run to take a 15-6 lead with 1:23 to play in the opening quarter.

Courtney Sandlin ended the run with a jumper, and Teanna Curry cut it back to a five-point game with an offensive rebound and put back to make it a 15-10 contest.

The Pioneers added their final two points of the quarter on an inbounds play with under three seconds to go to take a 17-10 advantage into the break.

Both teams shot around 35 percent from the field in the opening quarter but MidAmerica Nazarene added four points from the charity stripe while the Blue Raiders did not attempt a single free throw. Lindsey Wilson committed four turnovers while the Pioneers played clean basketball, not committing a single foul or turnover in the opening 10 minutes.

As the second quarter began, MidAmerica Nazarene continued their strong man-to-man defense, forcing the Blue Raiders to difficult shots on nearly every possession.

The Pioneers expanded their lead to 13 at the 6:57 mark of the quarter after MidAmerica Nazarene's sharpshooting guard Megan Balcom hit a step back three to make it 25-12.

As the deficit continued to grow, the Blue Raiders got even more desperate, forcing up hurried shots and never settling down into any kind of offensive rhythm.

MidAmerica Nazarene easily beat Lindsey Wilson's man defense with a series of pick and rolls and quick passes, eventually stretching the lead to 20 at 35-15 before taking a 37-19 lead into the break.

By halftime, Lindsey Wilson had shot just 24.1 percent from the floor and missed all nine of their attempts from three-point range. The Blue Raiders committed eight turnovers in the opening half and did not record a single assist in the opening 20 minutes.

MidAmerica Nazarene overcame their slow start and turned in a 45.2 shooting performance by the half, hitting four of 10 shots from beyond the arc.

The 19 points scored by Lindsey Wilson was the lowest scored by halftime all season, surpassing the previous low of 20.

The third quarter was an evenly matched affair, both teams trading baskets throughout the period. Lindsey Wilson continued to struggle on the offensive end, releasing wild shots and never establishing a fluent offense as well as being outhustled on the 50-50 loose balls. But MidAmerica Nazarene did not take advantage and the Blue Raiders actually outscored the Pioneers 16-15 in the third quarter to make it a 52-35 game heading to the final period.

Lindsey Wilson did hit their first and only three pointer of the game courtesy of Michelle Montgomery at the 2:59 mark of the third period.

The Blue Raiders quietly scored seven-straight points from the end of the third quarter to the early parts of the fourth to cut the lead to 13 at 52-39 with 8:55 to play.

But after a Pioneer basket at the 7:24 mark, the game went into a scoring lull as the next points in the game were not scored until the 1:57 mark of the contest. Missed shots and turnovers were plentiful by both teams during the scoring drought, something the Blue Raiders could not afford to do when attempting to spark a comeback run.

Lindsey Wilson scored their final points of the period with under a minute to play on a three-point play by Cameron McPherson as MidAmerica Nazarene secured a spot in the NAIA Fab Four with the 60-44 victory.

Lindsey Wilson finished the game shooting 30.4 percent from the field, including a 7.7 percentage (1-of-13) from beyond the arc, the lowest of the season and first time all year the Blue Raiders made just one three-point attempt.

MidAmerica Nazarene shot 37.3 percent for the game and hit 5-of-15 shots from beyond the arc. The Pioneers turned 14 Blue Raider turnovers into 15 points.

Lindsey Wilson actually outscored MidAmerica Nazarene 9-8 in the final quarter, but the first-half deficit was just too much to overcome.

Kayla Styles led the Blue Raiders with 13 points and eight rebounds while Chanel Roberts also had 13 points. No other Blue Raider scored more than four.

Jasmine Webb led the Pioneers with 12 points, followed by Balcom with 11. Tristin Wicks and Bailey Rinehart had nine each.

Lindsey Wilson's season comes to an end with a 28-7 record, the most wins in a single season in program history, while making the program's first-ever appearance in the national quarterfinals.
