LWC Baseball sweeps doubleheader with Pikeville By Charlie Balcom Pikeville, KY - The Lindsey Wilson baseball team opened Mid-South Conference play with a pair of road wins over Pikeville (Ky.) on Thursday at Johnnie Lemaster Field. The seventh-ranked Blue Raiders (19-6, 2-0 MSC) took the opening game 2-1 before plating 11 runs in an 11-3 victory in the nightcap over the Bears (10-9, 0-2 MSC). GAME 1 Scott Sebald pitched a gem, scattering seven hits while allowing just one run in a 2-1 Lindsey Wilson win to start the day. Sebald matched a season high with nine strikeouts over his eight innings. He issued just one free pass en route to his fifth win in six decisions this season. While Sebald was flourishing on the mound, the Blue Raider offense produced just six hits, stranding eight runners during the game. Lindsey Wilson took advantage of Pikeville miscues in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. Edgar Lebron reached base after being hit by a pitch by Pikeville starter Dalton Dahley. Lebron proceeded to steal second base and moved over to third on a Brandon Munoz groundout. Dahley unleashed another wild pitch allowing Lebron to score his 23rd run of the season, giving the Blue Raiders the 1-0 lead. Jayden Jackson drove home Aaron Ashton - who opened the sixth inning reaching on a Pikeville error - to double the Blue Raider lead. Jackson finished the game 1-for-3 with a RBI. Pikeville answered in the bottom of the sixth with its lone run of the game off a Lindsey Wilson error. Sebald allowed two base hits over the next two innings, but did not surrender a run to help keep the Blue Raiders in front. James Doubet pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to collect his fourth save of the season. GAME 2 Lindsey Wilson scored in five of the seven innings in an 11-3 win over the Bears to complete the doubleheader sweep. Lebron drove home four runs while Ashton, who had three hits in the game, Austin Atwell and Alec Salcedo each provided two RBIs. Atwell blasted his sixth home run of the season in the win. Tyler Russell (4-0) allowed three runs on nine hits over his five innings of work. He struck out three Bears without issuing a walk. Lebron started the Lindsey Wilson scoring in the top of the second with a three-run, bases-clearing triple. Lebron would later score on an RBI single by Ashton. Salcedo then made it a 5-0 lead after a sacrifice fly in the third inning. The Blue Raiders threatened to blow the game open in the fifth after loading the bases with one out, but only managed to push one run across to make it a 6-0 advantage. Pikeville quickly cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fifth on a three-run home run by Josh Bailey, but the Blue Raiders added a run in the sixth before exploding for a four-run seventh to increase the cushion to 11-3. Aaron Doughty, who had entered to pitch in the sixth, then closed out the game in the seventh, allowing just one hit. Lindsey Wilson outhit the Bears 13-10 in game two and was able to take advantage of 11 walks issued by the Pikeville pitching staff. The series is scheduled to conclude on Saturday with a noon CT first pitch at Pikeville. This story was posted on 2016-03-10 19:02:51
