KSNPC dedicates addition to Palk State Nature Preserve Pulaski County preserve contains rare acid seeps communities By Brent Frazier Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission (KSNPC) dedicated 88 acres as an addition to the 150-acre Frances J. Palk State Nature Preserve (SNP) in Pulaski County during the commission's March meeting. This preserve contains a series of acid seep communities that are very rare in Kentucky. These small wetlands with low pH are formed by seeps found at the heads of several small streams. Although much of the preserve is dominated by upland forest, more than 70 species of plants are found within these unusual seeps, several of which are considered rare. The addition to the Frances J. Palk SNP was purchased with Kentucky Heritage Land Conservation Funds, which uses proceeds from the sale of "Nature's Finest" license plates. The public can help in efforts like these by purchasing a bobcat, cardinal or monarch butterfly license plate through Kentucky's county clerk offices for an additional $10 above the cost of a regular license plate. The license plate is a tax deductible donation, which goes toward the preservation of natural areas in Kentucky to be held in trust for future generations. The mission of the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission is to protect Kentucky's natural habitat and biological diversity and to educate Kentuckians on the value and purpose of nature preserves and biodiversity conservation.
