LWC Baseball 9-2 at end of 11 game homestand

Early runs help No. 7 Lindsey Wilson Baseball defeat No. 23 Bryan 9-4

By Charles Balcom

COLUMBIA, KY - The Lindsey Wilson baseball team pushed across eight runs in the opening three innings to help the Blue Raiders top Bryan (Tenn.) 9-4 in a top-25 matchup on Wednesday night, March 9, 2016, at Egnew Park, 928 Russell Road, Columbia, KY.

The Blue Raiders conclude their 11-game homestand with a 9-2 record, improving to 17-6 overall on the year.

Seventh-ranked Lindsey Wilson scored three runs in the second and five runs in the third to open up an early 8-0 lead over the Lions (14-7).

The Blue Raiders pushed the three runs across in the second after taking advantage of a few Bryan miscues. With two runners on after a pair of walks, Jan Carlos Ortiz put down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away at first, allowing Miguel Reyes to score the opening run on the error. Austin Atwell scored one pitch later on a wild pitch and Alec Salcedo pushed across the final run of the frame on an RBI groundout.

After Brandon Munoz was hit by a pitch and Aaron Ashton doubled, Reyes opened the scoring in the third on an RBI single. Atwell followed with an RBI single of his own to make it a 5-0 lead. Ortiz then bunted for a base hit to load the bases before Salcedo hit a sacrifice fly for his second RBI of the day. A double steal moved the runners to second and third for Fabian Chirino who singled through the hole at shortstop to score the final two runs of the inning to make it an 8-0 Blue Raider lead.

Lindsey Wilson starter Daniel Ferrell had a strong showing as he tossed five scoreless innings before finally allowing a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh. Ferrell (4-1) would scatter eight hits while allowing two earned runs in his seven complete innings, earning his fourth win of the year.

Both Bryan runs in the sixth and seventh came via Justin Morhardt, who hit an RBI double in the sixth and an RBI single in the seventh.

The Lions continued to trim the Blue Raider lead in the eighth, scoring one run on a solo shot by Hudson Clare and one on a wild pitch by reliever Larry Stewart to make it 8-4, but Stewart was able to get out of the inning without giving up anymore damage.

Lindsey Wilson tacked on one more insurance run in the eighth on an RBI single by Munoz and Sam Ross closed out the game on the mound in the ninth to complete the 9-4 victory.

Both teams finished with 10 hits in the game, but while the Blue Raiders found ways to push runs across, the Lions struggled as they left 13 stranded. Ashton, Ortiz and Chirino each had two hits for Lindsey Wilson.

Bryan's Tristan Legault (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, on four hits in his two innings.
