Walker, Flint and Adams earn NAIA All-American honors

All three Blue Raiders finish in top five at NAIA Wrestling Championships

By Charlie Balcom

Topeka, KS - Matt Walker, James Flint and Chico Adams each placed in the top five of their respective weight classes on Saturday at the 59th Annual NAIA Wrestling National Championships, presented by USA Wrestling-Kansas.

Walker finished in third place at 174 pounds, Flint captured fourth place in the 125-pound class, and Adams secured fifth place at 285 pounds, each Blue Raider earning NAIA All-American status in the process as one of the top eight finishers in their weight class. It marks the second-straight year Flint and Adams have earned All-American honors while Walker earns his first award.

Walker and Flint both began the day with the goal of a national title within their grasps as they continued their tournaments in the national semifinal round, but the duo both suffered tight, two-point losses to slip into the consolation bracket.

Walker (ranked No. 4 at 174 pounds) faced off against top-ranked Riley Boomer of Missouri Valley in a frantic semifinal match at 174 pounds, where his comeback attempt came up just short. Boomer was granted an early takedown in the first period of the match and racked up over two minutes of ride time. Walker did earn a penalty point which made it a 2-1 match heading to the second period.

Walker then started down in the second period and put together a string of twists and turns trying to escape, but he was unable to break Boomer's grip around his waist. Every time Walker tried to roll out from the bottom, Boomer rolled with him and kept him contained. Walker would go on to suffer a four-point near fall that gave Boomer a 6-1 lead in the third period.

But Walker would not go away quietly. With just over a minute to go in the match, Walker finally escaped and seconds later he secured a takedown on Boomer by dragging his feet inside the circle to make it 6-4. But then Boomer planted himself flat on the mat trying to hold off any of Walker's attempts to flip him in the final 50 seconds. Despite being hit with a one-point stalling penalty, the strategy worked as Walker was unable to find any leverage to get Boomer in a near fall or pin scenario and Boomer held on for the 7-5 win after accounting for the ride time point. Walker then went to work in the consolation bracket as Boomer would later capture the national championship at 174 pounds.

In the wrestleback bracket, Walker first took down Kevin Corbett (No. 7) of Doane (Neb.) with a 5-3 decision to move into the third-place match where he then took care of business with an 11-3 major decision win over Willie Miller (No. 2) of Montana State-Northern to secure a top-three finish, his first All-American honor.

Flint (No. 7 at 125) met Indiana Tech's Mitch Pawlak (No. 2) in the semifinals to start the day.

He secured the first takedown of the match in the opening period, but Pawlak escaped after Flint accumulated around 30 seconds of ride time. Flint then elected to go neutral to start the second period with his 2-1 lead, but the strategy backfired when he suffered a critical takedown late in the period to give Pawlak the 3-2 advantage. Flint was unable to escape in the frame, and Pawlak started down in the third period and quickly escaped to make it a 4-2 lead. From there, Flint tried his best, but was just unable to find a takedown to equalize the match late as Pawlak held on for the win. Pawlak would continue on an eventually capture the NAIA National Championship at 125 pounds.

In the consolation rounds, Flint took down Quintel Fuchs (No. 6) of Montana State-Northern with a 7-1 decision to earn a spot in the third-place match against Troy Lakin (No. 3) of Menlo (Calif.).

Flint defeated Lakin earlier in the tournament with a 5-4 decision to advance to the championship semifinals, but this time Lakin would have the upper hand as he pulled off an 11-3 major decision, sending Flint to a fourth-place finish at the championships. It is Flint's best finish at the national tournament as he posted a sixth-place finish at last year's competition as a freshman.

Adams (No. 8 at 285), who was sent into the consolation brackets on Friday by the defending national champion, met Toby Cheff (No. 2) of Montana State-Northern in his first match of the day. Adams pinned Cheff in three minutes in an emotional victory to advance to the next round.

He then met Korey Walker (No. 11) of Oklahoma City and after a hard-fought battle, Walker was able to slip away in the final 15 seconds of the third period as Adams fell 3-2. The loss sent Adams to the fifth-place match where he faced off against Markese Christian (No. 6) of Wayland Baptist (Texas). Adams wrapped up the competition for the Blue Raiders in style, pinning Christian in four minutes and 39 seconds to grab the fifth-place finish. Adams finished in eighth place as an All-American a season ago at the championships.

The trio becomes the 26th, 27th, and 28th All-Americans in Lindsey Wilson program history in just its seventh year of existence.

As a team, the Blue Raiders finished in 12th place with 48.5 total points out of the 46 institutions that sent grapplers to the championships. Grand View (Iowa) captured the team national championship for the fifth-straight year with 210 points, followed by Montana State-Northern with 104 points.
