LWC softball wins 1 of 2 in Gulf Shores double header

Lindsey Wilson Softball beats Southeastern, falls to LSU-Alexandria on second day of Gulf Coast Invitational

By Charlie Balcom

Gulf Shores, AL - The Lindsey Wilson softball team split a pair of wild games on Saturday during Pool Play at the Gulf Coast Invitational at the Gulf Shores Sportsplex.

The second-ranked Blue Raiders (10-4) topped No. 16-ranked Southeastern (Fla.) 4-3 in a walk-off win in the opening game of the day, but fell to No. 4-ranked LSU-Alexandria (La.) 13-5 in the nightcap to move to 3-1 in pool play games.

GAME 1

Callum Pilgrim hit a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs as the Blue Raiders topped the Fire 4-3 to start the day.

Lindsey Wilson led 3-2 from the bottom of the second until the top of the fifth when Southeastern scored the tying run on an RBI double. After a scoreless sixth, Pilgrim stepped to the plate with two outs in the seventh and singled home Brittney Graves for the winning run.

It was a game of missed opportunities for both squads as the two teams combined to strand 28 total runners, 14 from each side. Lindsey Wilson racked up 13 hits, including a 4-for-5 day from Pilgrim at the plate. Jenna Firestein, Bailey Mize and Amber Foukes each had two hits.

Casey Bryan earned the win in a complete-game effort, allowing the three earned runs on nine hits.

GAME 2

Lindsey Wilson led LSU-Alexandria 5-0 after five complete innings, but a sixth-inning implosion where the Blue Raiders gave up 11 runs to the Generals made all the difference.

The Blue Raiders scored three times in the third on an RBI single by Pilgrim, a passed ball, and an RBI double by Sydney Fourman. Lindsey Wilson later tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on an error and an RBI single by Amy Rogers.

The Blue Raiders were just six outs away from a victory when the chaos happened.

Lindsey Wilson surrendered 10 hits in the inning, nine singles and one double, to go along with one hit by pitch and one walk to account for the 11-run swing. The Blue Raiders changed pitchers twice in the frame, but were unable to stop the Generals from putting balls into play and sending the runners around the base paths.

LSU-Alexandria added two more runs in the seventh as the Blue Raiders were retired in order in the sixth and seventh to end the game.

Bryan took the loss in a relief effort, allowing six earned runs on six hits while retiring just one batter in the sixth inning. After a solid start, Lyndsey Parden also hit a speed bump in the sixth as she finished allowing five earned runs on seven hits in her 5 and 2/3 innings.
