CU women's basketball edges LWC, advances to MSC finals

By Jordan Alves

Frankfort, KY - For the 14th time in program history, Lady Tiger basketball is headed to the Mid-South Conference Tournament final. Campbellsville withstood a late Lindsey Wilson College rally to knock off the Blue Raiders, 60-56.

Lindsey Burd hit two free throws with nine seconds left and Lindsey Wilson (25-6) ran out of time, as the Lady Tigers will advance to the final for the fourth straight year. CU will meet top-seeded and regular season champion Shawnee State University at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 6 at the Frankfort Convention Center.

Burd finished with a game-high 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her 11th double-double. Emily Fox scored 16 points, while LeeAnn Grider finished with 15. Kristen Jacob also had double-digit rebounds with 10.

Campbellsville (25-6) jumped to its largest lead of nine points with 6:06 remaining, 54-45, as Fox hit a 28-foot 3-pointer off a pass from Grider. But the Lady Tigers would go cold for the next four minutes and allowed Lindsey Wilson back in.

CU did not score for exactly four minutes, going 0-of-6 from the floor and turning the ball over on consecutive possessions. The Blue Raiders worked the lead to as little as two, 54-52, by going on a 7-0 run.

With 1:20 left and CU's ball, the Lady Tigers were able to run more than a minute off the clock. Kristen Jacob missed a field goal but Burd was there for the offensive board, and Cameron McPherson was called for a foul to reset the shot clock with 27 seconds left.

Campbellsville was able to run a little more time off the clock before Kayla Styles fouled Burd with 24 seconds left. Burd missed the first but made the second to push the lead to four points, 58-54.

After Styles made a bucket on the other end, Burd was fouled once again and hit both free throws to push the score to its final, 60-56. Styles led Lindsey Wilson with 17 points and her 18 rebounds to help the Blue Raiders outrebound CU, 47-39.

It was a very slow start for both teams, as CU and LWC combined to hit only six first-quarter baskets. Campbellsville took a 12-9 lead after the first frame. Lindsey Wilson outpaced Campbellsville in the second quarter but the Lady Tigers took a 26-24 advantage.

The Blue Raiders hit 49 percent (14-of-29) from the floor in the second half, while CU hit just 12-of-31 (39 percent). Lindsey Wilson actually outscored CU in the final quarter, 17-15.
