CHS tennis star to play at Campbellsville University By Calen McKinney Campbellsville High School standout tennis player Brooklyn Harris, a senior, has signed a letter of intent to continue her career at Campbellsville University this fall. Harris signed with CU in a ceremony on Monday, Feb. 29, with her friends, family, coaches and teammates. CHS Principal Kirby Smith said he is proud of Harris, not only for what she has accomplished on the court, but also as a student in the Campbellsville High School hallways. "These are the kids you like to see in the hallway," he said. "CU, you're getting a good one." Harris said she wants to thank her parents and coaches for their unwavering support during her tennis career at CHS. She said she thanks them for taking her to - and paying for - her lessons, driving her to practice and for always being there to support her. CU head women's tennis coach Kyle Caven said he has a great relationship with Harris and her coach, Sonya Kessler, a computer science teacher at CHS. Caven said he and the other CU tennis coaches have watched Harris for quite some time. "We feel like she's done very well over the last couple years," he said. Caven said he believes Harris will blossom even more in the competitive environment CU can offer. As of now, Caven said, next year's women's tennis roster contains 19 players, and he would like 20. That will mean Harris will see substantial playing time. Caven said he tells his players they get out of their season what they put into it. "We're excited," he said. "We like her fighting spirit. She'll help us a lot." Harris said she doesn't know her major just yet, but decided to sign with CU based on its mix of athletics and educational offerings. She said she had offers from other schools, some in other states. Harris is one of the top returning players in the 5th region this year. She advanced to the KHSAA tennis tournament last spring, where she advanced to the second round. She is the daughter of Sharon and Sam Shultz and David and Tammy Harris.
