Commentary: Thinks other counties affect Marion

Personal commentary by Shannon Sexton

I think the Adair Family Values Graphic Ad is a bit misleading. I'd like to add some information that the citizens of Adair Co. may find interesting.

Their ad shows quite a difference in Alcohol related crashes and deaths from 1995-2014 in Adair and Marion Co. [See Competing Statistics 1: Alcohol related vehicle crashes] Wonder how many of those Marion Co. alcohol related collisions and deaths are people from another county? From our county? Of course there is no statistics to reveal those numbers. Once can only assume based on other facts.

Marion Co. is bordered by Nelson, Washington, Larue, Taylor, Casey and Boyle Counties. Every single county surrounding them now allows the LEGAL sale of alcohol in some fashion except Casey and Larue.

Common sense: Local legalized alcohol sales = less drive time for those purchasing alcohol = less chance of alcohol related collisions.

Take a look at the graph attached [See: Competing Statistics 2: Alcohol related collisions by year] showing a steady decline in Marion Co. Alcohol Related Collisions. This info was compiled from KSP Annual Reports. Although Marion has realized a steady decline in collisions over the past decade, pay special attention to the following time frames:
  1. 2003 - Large Decline in Marion Co. Alcohol Collisions. Why? Bordering Boyle Co. city of Danville goes Moist.

  2. 2010 - Cliff Dive in Marion Co. Alcohol Collisions. Why? Bordering Taylor Co. city of Campbellsville (2008) is Moist and Danville (2010) goes Wet.

People make better decisions when they are informed. We want the citizens of Adair Co. to have all the facts - not just the cherry picked ones that push an agenda.

Thank you,
Shannon Sexton - PAC Chair
