CMS to host Dr. Seuss events/Read Across America week

Special Events Scheduled throughout week of February 29-March 4, 2016

By Calen McKinney

Campbellsville Middle School students will celebrate Dr. Seuss next week during several special events.

Read Across America Week is set for Monday, February 29, through Friday, March 4, 2016.

First, students can participate in dress-up days geared toward Seuss's books.

Monday is pajama day for "I Am Not Going To Get Up Today."

Tuesday is hat day, based on "Cat in the Hat."

Wednesday is Wacky Wednesday and students can wear their clothes backwards or inside out.

On Thursday, students can wear crazy socks, based on "Fox in Socks." And on Friday, students are asked to wear as much animal print as they can for "If I Ran the Zoo."

In addition to dress-up days, CMS will host events that center on reading. Each day during second period, CMS will participate in Drop Everything And Read - or DEAR - reading time from 9:05am to 9:25amET Everyone is asked to participate, including teachers, staff members and students.

Classrooms can compete in a door decorating contest based on Seuss's books.

Teachers will draw books at random and then decorate based on the story they have chosen.

Students will also have "Readers Theatre" pieces and Dr. Seuss quotes will be read during the morning and afternoon announcements.

CMS students will also receive Dr. Seuss bookmarks as "Caught You Reading" prizes.

Read Across America is an annual reading awareness program that motivates students to read. Activities are hosted each year around March 2, 2016, which was Dr. Seuss's birthday.
