LWC Baseball defeats Faulkner, falls to Talladega

By Charlie Balcom

Montgomery, AL - The Lindsey Wilson baseball team split a pair of games on Saturday as the Blue Raiders beat No. 3 ranked-Faulkner 5-4 to start the day, but fell to Talladega 5-3 in the nightcap in a pair of neutral-site games played at Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.).

The seventh-ranked Blue Raiders (6-3) saw their win streak shortly extended to six games with the win over the Eagles (8-2), before having it reset with a loss to the Tornadoes (10-2).

Lindsey Wilson used a final-inning home run in the first game of the day, but was unable to cap off a late rally in the second contest of the scheduled seven-inning affairs.

GAME 1

Austin Atwell hit a pinch hit solo home run in the top of the seventh to lift the Blue Raiders to a 5-4 victory over Faulkner to start the day.

Aaron Ashton got the scoring started for Lindsey Wilson in the top of the first as he hit a solo home run, his third of the season, over the right-field fence to put the Blue Raiders up 1-0 in the scheduled seven-inning affair.

The Eagles had a quick response in the bottom half of the inning as Darrius Jennings answered with a solo shot of his own on the first pitch he saw to make it 1-1. Faulkner then proceeded to load the bases with no outs on three-straight singles, but only managed to score once on a groundout as starting Blue Raider hurler Scott Sebald got the other two outs on strikeouts to end the threat.

Lindsey Wilson was retired in order in the second as Faulkner put two runners on in their half of the inning, but those base runners were erased by the arm of Dustin Woody as the catcher caught both Eagles trying to steal to end the inning.

The Blue Raiders retook the lead in the top of the third after Edgar Lebron doubled home Fabian Chirino from second for one run, followed by a Brandon Munoz single to score the speedy Lebron from second to make it 3-2. Ashton then recorded his second RBI of the game as he singled to score Munoz and make it 4-2.

After a scoreless fourth, Faulkner tied the game on a two-run home run by T.J. Condon in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-4.

The sixth went by scoreless and with two outs in top of the seventh, Atwell pinch hit for Chirino. The senior promptly blasted a 1-0 pitch over the left-field fence for his first career home run in a Blue Raider uniform to put Lindsey Wilson ahead 5-4.

James Doubet then replaced Sebald on the mound and got a groundout, strikeout, and another groundout from the top of the Faulkner order to end the game and pick up his first save of the year and grab a sixth-straight win for the Blue Raiders.

After a rocky start to begin the day, Sebald (2-1) settled in and other than the home run in the fifth, was able to limit the opportunities for the potent Faulkner offense. He doubled his strikeout total for the season, racking up eight in the win today to bring his total to 16 for the year, allowing four runs on nine hits in his six innings without issuing a walk.

Christian Torres took the loss for Faulkner giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits in his complete-game effort.

Ashton was the lone Blue Raider with multiple hits as a quarter of Eagles recorded a pair of hits. Faulkner outhit Lindsey Wilson 9-6 but left five runners on base compared to one by the Blue Raiders.

GAME 2

The second contest saw Lindsey Wilson put together a late rally in the bottom of the sixth but were ultimately unable to push enough runs across as the Blue Raiders fell 5-3 to Talladega.

The first two innings of the game went by scoreless before the teams combined to score five runs in the third inning.

Talladega used a two-run double and a sacrifice fly to score three runs in the top half of the third inning to take the 3-0 lead. The Blue Raiders answered in the bottom half of the inning after Lebron singled and Ashton hit his second home run of the day, fourth of the season, over the right-field fence to make it 3-2.

The Tornadoes answered with a two-run home run of their own in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 5-2. Both teams' bats went quiet for the most part until the bottom of the sixth when the Blue Raiders attempted to put together a late rally.

With two outs and a man on third, a Talladega error allowed Munoz to score and make it 5-3. Lebron then singled and Caleb Ratzman was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Ashton. But this time around Ashton was unable to come through with another big hit as he fouled out to end the threat. Lindsey Wilson was then retired in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game and give Talladega the 5-3 win.

Justin Zielinski (1-1) suffered the loss giving up the five earned runs on six hits in four innings. Larry Stewart pitched well in relief as he went three innings without allowing a hit.

Juan Marmol earned the win for the Tornadoes tossing 5-2/3 innings with two earned runs on six hits. Victor Negron picked up the save in relief.

Lebron and Ashton both had two hits for the Blue Raiders in the loss.
