Derek Nickel: Look at counties which have voted Wet

Pro-Legal Sales advocate asks voters to be Responsible, to look at other counties which have voted wet in our area and then make decision

By Derek Nickel
Personal commentary

It’s almost impossible to overstate how important next month’s wet-dry election is in Adair Counties social, cultural and economical history. It seems as though some people have blinders on when focusing on keeping Adair County dry and stagnant. I am not here to bash any personal or religious beliefs, you have just as much right to vote no for your own reasons as I do to vote yes. I would however like to attempt to sway your vote for my own (and many others) selfish, down right greedy reasons.

I will be greedy and vote yes next month because I want my children to grow up here in Adair County and not feel the need to leave. I will be greedy and vote yes because I would like to see growth here in this beautiful place I call home. I will be greedy and ask you to put aside your bias and simply look at some of the facts, the undeniable reasons that Adair county needs to vote yes. I will ask you to be courageous and forward-thinking citizens. Does this make me a bad person? No. So I would ask you not to be swayed when you are told that you are a bad person or that you should be ashamed for wanting to be apart of progress.

I ask that you simply stop, take a deep breath and realize how this could positively affect your community. Go seek the research that is available to you, go ask questions. Look at the surrounding areas that have voted yes to help their communities.

The argument that family values will be compromised due to the sale of alcohol surprises me. I am no expert in the matter but it makes logical sense to me that you should teach your kids responsibility. Having bootleggers here ready to supply your precious family with alcohol without asking questions is not responsibility. The solution? It is really quite simple, regulate it by voting yes.

I would just truly like to see this community rally together and make something special happen. My hope is that we have enough yes votes to get this passed. Once that happens it is also my wish for people to continue to push for more progress.

If wanting progress for this community makes me greedy and selfish then by all means I am just that. - Derek Nickel
