LWC Wrestling wins 2X Wed 10 Feb 2016: Takes MSC West title

By Charles Balcom

ST. CATHARINE, KY – The Lindsey Wilson wrestling team captured the outright Mid-South Conference West Division title on Wednesday with the Blue Raiders’ win over St. Catharine (KY) at Lourdes Hall.

No. 11-ranked Lindsey Wilson topped Lindenwood-Belleville (IL) 29-9 in a nonconference matchup to start the evening before defeating the host Patriots 33-6 in the nightcap to finish a perfect 4-0 in MSC West duals and capture the conference crown.

It marks the fifth-consecutive season that the Blue Raiders have captured at least a share of the MSC title and it is the third-straight year Lindsey Wilson has earned the outright conference championship.

The Blue Raiders (12-5, 4-0 MSC West) began the evening by taking down Lindenwood-Belleville in a neutral-site matchup at St. Catharine.

James Flint (ranked No. 10 at 125 pounds) got things started for the Blue Raiders in dominating fashion, taking just three minutes and 50 seconds to rack up a 15-0 technical fall victory over Jal’n Gomilla at 125 pounds to give Lindsey Wilson a 5-0 lead.

The Lynx, who are receiving votes in the national poll, quickly trimmed the lead to 5-3 after Jesse Martinelli was able to take down Brady Moser (No. 16 at 133) with a 7-3 decision in the next match.

Daniel Leonard (No. 7 at 141) got things back on the right track with a 20-5 technical fall in four minutes and 11 seconds to extend the Lindsey Wilson lead to 10-3. Leonard was able to redirect Esequiel Rodriguez’s takedown attempts and secure takedowns of his own to build his lead.

Evan Loe grinded out a wild win at 149 pounds over Michael Chatman. The physical back-and-forth match saw Loe secure a late takedown in the third period to tie the match, sending it to overtime. Once in overtime, Loe took down Chatman seconds into the period to grab the SV-1 11-9 victory.

Bryce Hoffman extended the Blue Raider lead even further after his 8-4 decision win over Chase Larson made it a 16-3 Lindsey Wilson lead.

An injury for Lindsey Wilson during the 165-pound match allowed Lindenwood-Belleville to pick up six points and trim the lead to seven at 16-9.

But from there the Blue Raiders closed out the match on a 13-0 run over the final four matches to secure the dual win. Rhodes Bell, Lucas Miozza and Kohl Dodd all picked up decision wins before Ameer Daniels finished the match with a major decision at the heavyweight class.

Bell won via 8-4 decision over Joseph Robinson (No. 16 at 174), Miozza won with a 5-0 shutout of Trevor Roderick-Wood, and Dodd grabbed a 9-5 decision over Luis Monsivais before Daniels’ 9-0 shutout major decision over Jonathan Garcia to end the dual with a 29-9 Blue Raider victory.
In the nightcap, Lindsey Wilson secured the conference divisional title with a 33-6 win over the Patriots (8-6, 0-3 MSC West).

Chad Lampe opened things up by making quick work of David Hernandez at 125 pounds, pinning him in one minute and 55 seconds for the 6-0 lead.

Moser was in a dogfight with Cole Tawney at 133 pounds that required overtime to determine a winner. After the match was tied at 5-5 following the third period, Moser eventually secured a reversal in the top-bottom periods to win TB-2 (7-5) and add another three points towards the team total.

Leonard then defeated Anthony Ashford in a physical, hard-fought battle at 141 pounds with a tight 5-3 decision to make it a 12-0 start for the Blue Raiders.

St. Catharine was able to break up the shutout after Keevi Matlock edged Loe at 149 pounds with a 10-7 victory to cut the Lindsey Wilson lead to 12-3.

Hoffman grabbed his second win of the night, a 6-3 decision over Garrett Carter at 157 pounds to push the lead back to double digits at 15-3.

Logan Hatfield, who has wrestled this season at 141 and 149 pounds, bumped up to the 165-pound class where he battled hard the entire match, but eventually fell to Shelby Floyd in a 7-5 decision.

The Blue Raiders got back to their winning ways with the strength of their lineup down the stretch, racking up 18 total points during the final four weight classes, including a pair of pins.

Matt Walker (No. 8 at 174) nabbed the first pin of the match over Mitch Rusch at 174 pounds. Walker was able to leverage his body from the down position to put Rusch between himself and the mat on his back. He then pressed down and used his strength to stick Rusch to the mat for the pin.

Bell moved up to 184 pounds against the Patriots where he met Zach Sullivan. Bell was able to secure a 7-5 decision win and give the Blue Raiders the 24-6 lead, mathematically sealing things for Lindsey Wilson.

Jake Maupin (No. 8 at 197) then made quick work of TJ Edwards at 197 pounds. Maupin was in complete control from the start as he dominated Edwards and eventually pinned him in one minute and 44 seconds.

Chico Adams (No. 5 at 285) then put together a 12-5 victory over Deaken McCoy at 285 pounds to cap off the 33-6 victory for Lindsey Wilson.
