CU football signs 17 on National Signing Day

Local area signees include Devin Rafferty, Austin Hash and Kendon Young, all of Campbellsville

Campbellsville, KY - Coming off back-to-back Mid-South Conference Championships, Tiger Football had a few big shoes to fill and did so today. Head coach Perry Thomas and his staff took another step towards building the foundation for years to come by signing 17 players on National Signing Day.

The fax machine was printing out letters of intent all day long, with the majority coming in the morning hours.

"We had a huge day," said Thomas. "The guys we wanted for the most part, we were able to get in. There are still a few LOI's out there that can be major contributions to our program and we are waiting on them but it was an exciting day for us."

The Tigers are coming off their third Mid-South Conference Championship and second straight. In addition, CU has reached the NAIA Football Championship Series Playoffs the previous two seasons.

This past season, Campbellsville had one of the most prolific offenses in the country. CU ranked No. 3 in the NAIA by throwing for 350 yards per game and averaging 510 total yards. But the Tigers lose the Mid-South Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Year, quarterback Jacob Russell. Russell shattered every program record to date in his two years under center.

CU also had a strong receiving core with Jarrod Harrington, Tyus Alcorn and Zerric Willis. Harrington graduated by averaging 96 receiving yards per game in his senior campaign but Alcorn and Willis return 26 touchdowns from 2015.

The defensive side of the ball was also one of the best in the NAIA last season. CU ranked No. 8 in opponents third down conversion and its young secondary held opponents to only throwing only 184 yards per game.

Today's signing class had a total of seven defensive players, nine offensive and one specialist. The Tigers picked up two transfers - Sean Mardis (Alabama State University) and Deondre Hoosier (Eastern Kentucky University). The remaining 15 signees all came from the high school ranks with three local talents coming on board - Kendon Young (RB, Campbellsville HS), Austin Hash (LB, Campbellsville HS) and Devin Rafferty (WR, Taylor Co. HS). Many other student-athletes will sign at later dates.

"This is a great start," said Thomas. "At the NAIA level, the recruiting season id a long process but you want to make that impact today and get those main kids that you are after. We certainly got some big ones today and some guys passed up on NCAA Division I to wear that maroon and grey next year. There will be a lot more to come on later this spring. A lot of very good talent is still left but today was a baseline start and we are excited."

Campbellsville starts spring practice on April 4 with the spring game scheduled for April 28 at Finley Stadium and Citizens Bank Field. Game time has not been announced.

The Tigers kickoff the 2016 season on the road at University of the Cumberlands on Aug. 27.
