CU Lady Tiger basketball jumps to No. 1 in NAIA ranking

By Richard RoBards
CU sports information assistant

Kansas City, MO - Lady Tiger Basketball is back where it started, moving into the No. 1 spot in the latest NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the national office announced today.

The Lady Tigers were ranked No. 1 in the preseason before some early-season losses dropped them to as low as 4th in the Dec. 8 poll.

Campbellsville, which has ranked in the top four in every poll this season, returns to the No. 1 spot for the first time since headlining the preseason poll. The Tigers received five first-place votes and 214 total points. CU has been ranked in 87-straight polls dating back to the 2008-09 season and has been ranked inside the Top 25 for 24 straight polls.

Campbellsville has won 12 straight games en route to a 17-3 overall record and 5-1 mark in the Mid-South Conference.

In last week's NAIA Network Game of the Week, presented by Stretch Internet, Campbellsville ended then-No. 17 Pikeville's (Ky.) perfect season, 67-54. The Bears had entered the game riding a NAIA-best 17-game winning streak.

No. 2 Westmont (Calif.) and No. 5 Columbia (Mo.) also claimed first-place votes in the poll. Westmont and Bethel (Tenn.) tied for the No. 2 spot in the poll with 204 points, while No. 4 Our Lady of the Lake (Texas), No. 5 (tied) Columbia (Mo.) and No. 5 (tied) Carroll (Mont.) round out the remainder of the top five.

The Mid-South Conference (MSC) leads all leagues with five teams represented: Campbellsville, No. 7 Shawnee State (Ohio), No. 16 (tied) Pikeville (Ky.), No. 22 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) and No. 25 Cumberland (Tenn.) The MSC (Campbellsville and Shawnee State), American Midwest Conference (Columbia and Lyon) and Golden State Athletic Conference (Westmont and Vanguard) each have a pair of teams in the top 10.

Campbellsville continues its conference home stand as the Lady Tigers host St. Catharine College Thursday, Jan. 21 at 6:00 in the Powell Athletic Center.
