Superintendent Reed commends school employees By Alan W. Reed Superintendent, Adair County Schools I sent this letter out to all our employees this morning. Our team demonstrated meritorious service last evening to have Adair County Elementary School (ACES) ready for students this morning after a major mechanical failure yesterday. Repair and cleanup involved a large group and continued for around 6 hours. Dear faculty and staff: Around 3:30pmCT yesterday afternoon a 4" supply line in the upper level (mezzanine) at Adair County Elementary School ruptured, spewing out nearly 500 gallons of water within minutes. Had no one been present, it could have been much worse. Within minutes, ceiling tiles in the central hallway fell through. Water cascaded down the walls of the computer lab and into some of the computer units. We began trying to save the machines by quickly disconnecting them, yanking cords, and running with them. Thankfully, Mr. Steve and Ms. Wilson were still in the building and called maintenance for help. From the moment the call went out, the rest of the evening became a demonstration of the kind of teamwork, commitment and effort we have here in this district from a talented and dedicated group of employees--custodial, maintenance, administrative, technical support. Had it not been for their teamwork and willingness to respond to the need and come in to work beyond their regular shift, we would not be in school today and the crucial MAPP testing at ACES, begun yesterday, would have been interrupted. The work went on until around 9:00 p.m.when Carla, Jason and her team reassembled the computer lab and has it running for completion of the MAPP testing this morning. I want to personally thank a group of people who stayed up late, came in after hours, got wet and dirty, scraped knuckles, mopped floors and took charge, yet worked together. The list is in no particular order: Mr. Steve Burton, Ms. Sandra Wilson, Jason Mardis, Valerie Woodie, Randolph Lewis, Mark Parnell, Trent Booher, Gary Powell, David Jones, Carla Perkins, and tech staff. My reason for writing this is just to remind you how quickly things can go wrong and how we have to count on each other. No one's job is more important than anyone else's in our district. Thanks again to all who came to the rescue and who kept what could have easily been a disastrous incident confined! Alan W.
