By Calen McKinney

Campbellsville High School students are teaching elementary students how to write computer coding.

On Thursday, January 7, 2016, CHS students went to Campbellsville Elementary School to talk to third-graders in Patty Haley's class about coding and how important it is.

Student Technology Leadership Program and AP computer science students told the third-graders that learning computer coding can help them in their future careers. They then led a hands-on activity in which the elementary school students wrote computer codes and portrayed robots to test the codes for accuracy.

The activity is part of the worldwide Hour of Code initiative. More than 750 of Kentucky's schools, businesses and organizations participated in the Hour of Code. In 2013, when the initiative began, there were 30 events.

The CHS students conducted the activity at Campbellsville Middle School last month. Calen McKinney, the writer, is Pubic Information Officer/Grant Writer at Campbellsville Independent School District.
