New Year's State of Public Education, AC School District

By Alan W. Reed

As we embark on a new year I want everyone in Adair County to know where we are headed with our school district. While we continue to expand the shared vision, it is exciting to know that we are now LIVING the vision. Here are just some of our most important plans for 2016 and beyond guaranteed to change lives and help set our county up for continued growth:

AC Schools will continue role as primary economic engine for Adair County

Adair Schools will continue to earn its new place as the primary economic engine for Adair County. ACHS will shift to additional career pathways, especially technical ones, which will prepare students for high paying jobs upon graduation.

Adair School District will begin strong partnership with KCTCS

We will begin our strong partnership with KCTCS and begin to offer adult education courses in the evening--the first being Gas Metal Arc Welding (including robotic welding) to begin in mid-January.

Indian University will continue to grow

Indian University will continue to grow and we will see a large increase in the number of students graduating high school with at least 30 college hours under their belts. Students will have a competitive edge and parents will benefit from the reduced cost of a year or more of college.

Great progress expected this year on Community Learning Center

Working through the Lake Cumberland Area Development District and Somerset Community College and KCTCS, our district will move forward with securing state and federal funding to construct the Community Learning Center across from ACHS which will offer technical programs in robotics, 3-D printing, Cybertechnology, Industrial Maintenance and other certificated programs for students and adults alike.

Adair Co. Career & Technical announcement coming soon

We expect to announce the formation of the Adair County Career and Technical Academy with the mission of providing ACHS freshmen the oppportunity to be exposed to and learn skills in high needs career and technical careers.

School health care will be improved

We will improve and already excellent "mini clinics" located in each school and will strengthen our partnership with Cumberland Family Medical in this innovated school/private partnership.

Four day pre-school program will return

Speaking for our action group, I will formally request that the board approve the return to a 4 day per week pre-school program to partially address the issue of low percentage of students who are "Kindergarten Ready".

Blacktopping, removal of old school bus garage priorities

Although we have taken care of so many campus improvement projects, there are still others to go--including blacktop replacement and removal of the dilapidated school bus garage behind the middle school.

These above items are just the highlights. I want to thank everyone in our county for getting behind our schools, particularly the upgrades to our academic programs.

Focus of the state is on Adair County Schools

The whole state is looking at Adair County Schools and our streamlined business model and the change from a "college for all mentality" to a Career Readiness model for all direction.

Community-wide support made school support possible

Please remember that none of this remarkable turnaround could have happened without community-wide support and a mandate for change!

Sincerely,
Alan W. Reed, Superintendent, Adair County Schools
