Mayor Curtis Hardwick issues statement on Wet-Dry drive

By City of Columbia Mayor Curtis Hardwick
Received Wed 16 December 2015 at 2:29pmCT

"Several monthsago a group of people met withan ABC attorney in Frankfort about a wet/dry vote for the City of Columbia. Then we started meeting on a regular basis at the county judge's office because he wanted to be involved.

"At the second meeting we had, the attorney we had hired informed the judge that the county could put a tax on alcohol sales if the city went wet. A few weeks later were told by the same attorney the county could not. The judgge asked the committee if they would go countywide. The committee voted 'no,' stating that they did not believe it would pass countywide. The next meeting we had, the judge again asked if we could change it to countywide. The committee voted 'no' for the same reason as before.

"The judge asked me if the city would consider sharing the tax with the county. I told him I'd have to address the council, but I'd try to do what was legal and fair. I wrote a letter to the ABC attorney, and he replied back that the city could not share revenue with the county due to strict accountability and regulations. I also brought in front of the council to help the county fund 911. The council said they'd like to see documentation and a budge so they could make a good decision.

"Last Tuesday, the PAC decided to go countywide, ignoring the committee's vote.

"What most citizens don't understand is that the safety officer at our schools is funded by the city at a cost of $40,000 a year. By rights, the county should pay half of that because there are a lot of county students in the school system. In the past the judge and mayor agreed that the city would pay for the School Resource Officer and the county would pay of 911. That's one reason the council had questions. If someone tells you the city is the cause for going countywide with the wet/dry vote, it's not true."
