News from Lindsey Wilson College

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - The Lindsey Wilson volleyball team came from a set down to top No. 14 MidAmerica Nazarene 3-1 (27-29, 25-20, 25-18, 25-18) on Wednesday night in the second round of pool play matches at the NAIA Volleyball National Championship held at the Tyson Events Center.

The top-ranked Blue Raiders (35-3) had to overcome a strong defensive front line effort by the Pioneers (27-10) to earn their 27th-straight victory and improve to 2-0 in Pool A.

The match seemed destined for an offense-defense matchup as Lindsey Wilson came into the contest with the fourth-best hitting percentage in the nation, while MidAmerica Nazarene held the fifth-most total blocks.

Neither team was able to create separation in the first set, playing to a 9-9 tie in the early goings. MidAmerica Nazarene captured the next point and proceeded to build a slight lead over the Blue Raiders, pushing it to as many as five at 15-10 thanks to their blocking abilities. They finished with four blocks in the opening set alone. The Pioneers also hit right through or around the Lindsey Wilson block attempts as the Blue Raiders finished with just one in the set.

But Lindsey Wilson continued to battle and trimmed the lead to one and even pulled level at 19-19 and 22-22. The Blue Raiders finally retook the lead for the first time since it was 1-0 with a kill by Ragni Knudsen to make it 23-22. MidAmerica Nazarene quickly retook the lead with set point at 24-23, and again at 25-24, but two-straight points by Lindsey Wilson put the Blue Raiders ahead 26-25 thanks to kills by Carol Siqueira and Makenzie Montano.

Lindsey Wilson would have set point twice in the frame but failed to capitalize on either chance as the Pioneers scored three-straight points to close out the frame 29-27 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.

The Blue Raiders were held to a .222 attacking percentage while the Pioneers posted a .333 mark in the set.

In the second set, the two teams traded points until the Blue Raiders took a 9-8 lead. Then Lindsey Wilson found some momentum and used an 8-2 run to build a 17-10 lead in the set. The Pioneers attempted to bring things closer as they clawed to within four points twice, but the Blue Raiders closed things out 25-20 using a pair of kills from Carolynne Silva to even the match at one set apiece. Lindsey Wilson hit .265 for the set while holding the Pioneers to .091. The Blue Raiders cut the number of times they were blocked in the first set in half, seeing their shots downed just twice. While Lindsey Wilson recorded just one block in the set, the Blue Raider defenders at the net were able to turn back shot after shot from the Pioneers and force MidAmerica Nazarene into setting up the offensive attacks again.

Lindsey Wilson continued the momentum into the third set and built an early 6-2 lead, but a quick 7-3 run by the Pioneers brought things level once again at 9-9. Lindsey Wilson began struggling again to get the block down as MidAmerica Nazarene hit through the attempt or elected to send shots down the line for points, taking their first lead of the frame at 11-10.

The Blue Raiders fell behind 12-10, but three quick points later they retook the lead at 13-12 and pushed it to 15-12, forcing a Pioneer timeout. With the block struggling to stop the attacks, the Blue Raider back line was forced into frequent action and Caitlyn Tino, Alexa Just, Candace Timberlake and Jill Book all provided timely digs to help ignite a Lindsey Wilson rally.

The timeout could disrupt the Lindsey Wilson rhythm as they extended the lead to six at 19-13. MidAmerica Nazarene got it down to four points, but Silva came up big down the stretch with her blocking and scoring abilities and helped push the lead to seven at 23-16 and again at 24-17 before a kill by Knudsen sealed the set 25-18.

Lindsey Wilson hit .273 in the win while halving the number of times they were blocked again, seeing their shots blocked down just once in the frame. MidAmerica Nazarene posted a .207 hitting percentage in the set.

The fourth set started similar to the third with Lindsey Wilson building a quick lead, forcing a Pioneer timeout. The Blue Raiders pushed their advantage to as many as five at 15-10, forcing another MidAmerica Nazarene timeout.

MidAmerica Nazarene refused to go away late and a 6-3 run brought them within two points at 18-16 before tying things up at 20-20. Knudsen then recorded back to back kills to make it 22-20, and after a Pioneer error, Knudsen and Molitor blocked a shot to make it 24-20. MidAmerica Nazarene clawed one back but another Pioneer error put things to an end as Lindsey Wilson took the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

Lindsey Wilson posted their best numbers in the final frame as they hit .318 to set their total for the match to .271. The Blue Raiders were blocked just once in the final set.

Siqueira finished with a match-high 20 kills, while Knudsen added 17. Both middle blockers had a monster night for the Blue Raiders as Molitor set a new season high with 11 kills while hitting .370 and Silva matched her season-high with 14 while hitting .407. Montano also notched a season-high with 59 assists in the victory while Tino led the team with 21 digs.

Sofija Berezovska led the Pioneers with 17 kills in the loss. MidAmerica Nazarene came into the match averaging 9.4 blocks per game and managed to record eight in the loss. The Pioneers were held to a .204 attacking percentage for the match, including a .167 mark for the final set.
