Harry Mack: Warning on Phone Shysters claiming to be from IRS 'If you get any of these calls, ignore them. Please don't panic or worry about them. They are all from crooks! The IRS does not call people if they owe money; they send a notice in the mail.' HARRY MACK Click on headline for complete personal commentary column By Harry Mack From Campbellsville, KY, Fri 6 Nov 2015 For those of you that read my commentary about shysters trying to rip off people over the phone, I would like to make an additional comment that may save some people a lot of worry. Within the last week, I have received two phone calls, one from the 202 (D.C.) area code and another from a Texas cell phone number. Both of the calls claimed to be the IRS and both said that I owed money and if I didn't pay it, I would be arrested! The voices and content of the recordings were different. If you get any of these calls, ignore them. Please don't panic or worry about them. They are all from crooks! The IRS does not call people if they owe money; they send a notice in the mail. They also do not send recorded messages which give a "case number." Why would they record a message with a "case number" if, logically, each person should have a different "case number? If you wish to confirm this after you get a call, just do a search on the number that shows up and you will probably see many comments from people complaining about these scams. There is more than just one criminal enterprise doing it. A good place to read about this is a government blog Web site: my-very-own-irs-imposter-call I hope this has put some minds at ease and saved someone from getting ripped off.
