Leaders in Literacy Day 2015, Fri 30 Oct 2015 Click on headline for complete story with photo(s) By Debbie Cowan Story book characters came alive at Adair County Elementary School on Friday, October 30, 2015 as part of the school's first annual Leaders in Literacy Day. Visitors to the school were introduced to such literary characters as Tom Sawyer, the Cat in the Hat, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and the Three Little Pigs. There were also famous historical figures present such as Babe Ruth and Queen Elizabeth and current celebrities such as the Duck Dynasty boys. This amazing event was presented by the entire 4th grade student body at ACES under the leadership of Mrs. Amy Walker and Mrs. Pam Compton. Prior to the event, students were asked to develop a project after learning about children’s literature, fictional characters, biographies, drama and historical events. Student projects included giving oral presentations, creating skits from the books they read, posters, diorama’s, role-playing and character impersonations. The focus of the entire project was for the students to determine how they could creatively display their knowledge and teach others about famous novels, characters, historical figures and authors. Parents and other community members were invited for Leaders in Literacy Day to view the displays and enjoy the many wonderful presentations. ACES principal Steve Burton was thrilled with the day. "It has been an awesome day for students and staff. It is amazing what our kids can do when we get out of their way," he said. The Leaders in Literacy Day was part of intentional efforts to promote student leadership and to offer parents and the community a chance to view the excitement that creative teaching and learning brings.
