Jon Halsey: Taken aback calculus not being offered at ACHS

Personal commentary

Admittedly it has been well over 50 years since I left High School and almost 30 since my youngest graduated, however, I was taken aback to learn that the local High School does not offer calculus.

The typical college prep lane when I was in high school was two years of Algebra, one year of Geometry, one year of Trig and one year of Calculus. We were also required to take one year of Biology, one year of Chemistry and one year of Physics.

This was combined with two years of Latin and one year of a foreign language. At my school this could have been French, German or Spanish. Two additional years of all four languages were offered as electives.

Back then Trig and Calculus burned deep ruts in the brain but with the Scientific calculators and Smart phones available today, it would seem to be much easier.

I can't help but wonder what has taken its place.
