Billy Joe Fudge: Pahkasalo leap brings memory of Steve Walkup

Comments re photo 61924 Aleksi Pahkasalo, Vantaa, Finland celebrates 2nd goal

By Billy Joe Fudge

I know there is the possibility of an optical "delusion" taking place in this photo but if all things are as they appear, Aleksi must have one heck of a vertical leap. He might even rival the 48 inch vertical leap of Darrell Griffith or at least the 39 inch leap of Rex Chapman who as far as my research can turn up are the Commonwealth of Kentucky's greatest vertical leapers.

I know of no actual measurement for the greatest vertical leaper (according to many eyewitnesses, including me) in Adair County Basketball History, Steve Walkup. It was a thing of beauty to see him soar upward and upward with his face seemingly parallel with the plane of the goal at the apex of his leap. Steve was a most gifted athlete who could have no doubt, jumped over a grand piano but could also play the thing.

I can still remember him entertaining those gathered in the Old Adair County Gym in impromptu sessions on the piano on the stage. It would be great if Mike Watson or his cousin Jim could turn up some old photos of Steve taking flight. I'm sure the Adair County sports coverage from 65 to 69 might produce something. -- Thanks, Mr. Fudge - Every one of the individuals you name are outstanding, but there is no doubt in my mind that you are overlooking Hack Rowe. Six-one and no center ever out jumped him, at least not at the games I made it to. Hack got the tip every time. There ought to be a statue to him. - EW
