Billy Joe Fudge: Encore editorial on Leadership from 5 years ago By Billy Joe Fudge Guest editorial "Below is a letter which I submitted to CM over 5 years ago. NOTHING HAS CHANGED and NOTHING WILL EVER CHANGE UNTIL the Mayor stands before his city council and the County Judge Executive stands before his fiscal court and addresses the issue. NOTHING GETS DONE WITHOUT VISIONARY LEADERSHIP - President Kennedy saying, " ...I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth" and President Reagan making the declaration, "Tear down this wall" were acts of courageous leadership which precipitated defining moments in the course of our nation and the world. DEFINING MOMENTS DON'T JUST HAPPEN. Defining moments are not karma. Defining moments are created. Sometimes they are created in the face of great resistance and at what appears to be, great risk. However, strong, intuitive, visionary leaders are able to discern when doing nothing is a more detrimental and damaging action than doing something. It is time for our community to experience a defining moment. It is time for our community's leadership to lead. - BILLY JOE FUDGE. Editorial remembered this morning on seeing a reminder, above left, (Is it or is it not safe to cross? Is it in fact a crosswalk?) that progress has been too little in the past five years. My Two Cents Worth "Hey Ed, I know everyone is tired of my two cents worth, but here comes another penny's worth to ponder. There is no great mystery as to the problems with no new businesses locating Downtown, few customers calling on existing businesses located Downtown, businesses closing Downtown, and buildings for the most part setting idle and becoming less desirable on a continuing basis. All one needs to do is plan an excursion Downtown to discover the impediments to economic development such as:
Here is the bottom line. I don't mean to be flippant. I have no hidden agenda. The upcoming suggestion is not aimed at anyone individual or groups. I am just making a point. I just want you to imagine the scene in your mind. I am just asking all of us to consider what would happen if for the next month our Adair County Judge Executive and Fiscal Court, our Mayor of Columbia and the City Council, all our elected officials and local government employees were required to spend 30 minutes each day at 2 PM walking around and lounging on the square and making at least one trip through the Courthouse. I believe we might see a need for drivers to respect pedestrians, sheltered sidewalks with fans, slower traffic around the Courthouse, one lane of traffic around the Courthouse, green space and sheltered seating, etc. I believe we drivers would take the by-pass between 2 and 3PM if we knew we couldn't whiz through Downtown because of all the pedestrians. I believe we would all see that the pedestrian activity that is needed to support a vibrant, downtown, retail economy is probably not going to happen under current conditions. On second thought, maybe we all should plan a couple of days to take a little excursion just so we don't have to imagine." - Billy Joe This story was posted on 2015-08-30 10:57:26
