Columbian surprised to learn Salato Center named for her doctor It was only about 10 years ago, on a company sponsored trip to the Salato Wildlife Education Center in Frankfort, that Adair County native Von Price saw Dr. Salato's photo and she realized it was named for her childhood family doctor - the Columbia physician who delivered her own son. About Comments re photo 61845 Groundhog at Salato Wildlife Education Center By Von Price I have to tell you a little something about the Salato Wildlife Center, for those who have never been there. This is a beautiful Wildlife Center which was named after Dr. James Salato. He was such an avid fisherman and loved wildlife so much that they named this place after him. I only learned this myself about 10 years ago. It certainly is a beautiful place for a family day trip. They have all kinds of wild animals, and all the native snakes of Kentucky. When I lived in Louisville and the Center would have a fundraiser each year. Where I worked we would go and work and be one of the sponsors. They would have sponsors from all of Kentucky distilleries. There would be B-B-Q, and there was always a group of gentleman who would be there frying Catfish and Crappie that were so fresh. Talk about tasty food and drinks, it was a great fundraiser for the Center. I actually didn't know that it was named after our Dr. Salato until the first time I went there and saw his picture. I had to tell everyone working there that I knew Dr. Salato. He delivered my son and when I was growing up in Adair County, he was our family doctor. He was such a wonderful and such a kind Gentleman. I can still see him looking at my dad and saying "Now Mr. Flatt, what tale have you got for me today?" And he would just give out this big laugh. When you are a child you are always afraid of going to the doctor. I was never scared going to see Dr. Salato. He just made you feel so at ease. The only thing I didn't like about going to see him that long flight of stairs you had to climb. I guess I was just as lazy then as I am now... LOL. Just wanted to say a little something about the wonderful Salato Wildlife Center. Thank you letting me tell my story.
