A rising star, moving on up in Adair County, KY

Five-year-old Daria has gone on to higher education at ACPC.

By Ed Waggener

She is a grown up big girl, now in kindergarten at Adair County Primary Center. She's graduated from P-1 and P-2 at Adair County Elementary and recently, at the start of school this year, when her mother, Paula Cheng, was driving the family van past ACES on the way to ACPC, Daria said, with more than a bit of disdain, "Babies go there."

Daria is a delightful hand full, for adults, with her surprising vocabulary, intellect, and the little bit of bossiness which comes with being youngest in the family. She's not afraid to give her mother guidance, when necessary. Recently, when she was asked why she hadn't cleaned up her room, it was upsetting, "Mother," she said, "you're frustrating me," and when mom was insistent, Daria had to lay down the law. "Be patient, Mother!" she said.

Daria has already found her "Leader in me," insisting she always be at the head of the line at the cafeteria - no assertiveness training needed, thank you very much!

Fortunately, her grandfather - as all granddads do - understands, and always takes her side when she is right, which in grandfather's eyes, is all the time.

(Granddads just know perfection when they see it.)

Who knows? Besides growing up to a Nobel medalist and President, she'll likely be among a large number in the future who earn enough dual credits to graduate with a high school diploma and a Bachelor's degree in the 48 months or less.

Her parents, Peter and Paula Cheng, own and operate Tray's Garden, the Chinese restaurant, 906 Jamestown Street, Columbia.
