Free Gun Locks for Military and Veterans at State Fair Sunday by Lisa Aug Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs (KDVA) and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will be giving away gun locks to active-duty military service members and veterans on Military Appreciation Day at the Kentucky State Fair this Sunday, Aug. 23. "We are happy to be able to provide these gun locks to veterans and military members," said KDVA Commissioner Heather French Henry. "They know better than anyone the importance of gun safety. We are also passionate about decreasing the numbers of veterans who commit suicide each day and this is one way we can possibly help to do just that." According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA), 22 U.S. veterans commit suicide every day, many by using a gun. The USDVA estimates that only five to seven of those 22 have received benefits or mental health services through USDVA. "As Sheriff of Jefferson County and a military veteran," said Jefferson County Sheriff Col. John Aubrey, "I am proud to join Heather and the KDVA in support of this unique program to provide gun locks for our many Kentucky veterans." The gun lock giveaway will take place at the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office area near the food court in the South Wing. KDVA staff will be available all day Sunday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with material about KDVA programs, including benefits counselors to answer questions about benefits and services. KDVA asks veterans and military members to present identification for the gun locks: military ID, DD-214 or Veterans Designation driver's license. This story was posted on 2015-08-18 14:25:04
