Billy Joe Fudge: We can rejuvenate Downtown Columbia

Comments re article 76938 Lt Gov Luallen cuts Ribbon on renovated Springfield building

By Billy Joe Fudge

We can do the same thing in Columbia but it takes leadership, cooperation, dedication and hard work.

We, the Homeplace on Green River and Tebbs Bend Nature and Recreation Area, just dedicated 5+ miles of trail located just over in Taylor County. It was a $160,000 project of which $80,000 was a grant.

Taylor County Judge Executive, Eddie Rogers found out about the grant opportunity and asked me and others if we would help him to put together the figures needed to make the application. After many hours of research and meetings with individuals with expertise in various fields we made the application and was ultimately successful.

We can rejuvenate Downtown Columbia. We can make it easy for nearly 2000 Lindsey students, professors, and staff, living and working on Lindsey Hill to leisurely walk to Downtown Columbia in less than 10 minutes. We can make it easy, safe and comfortable for folks to shop, relax, eat and hang out in Downtown Columbia. We can protect folks from inclement weather conditions as they walk from the numerous parking areas surrounding Downtown Columbia. We can make Downtown Columbia a vibrant, living, breathing community again.

Yes, we can rejuvenate Downtown Columbia and much of it can be paid for by outside funding sources if we do the "Three P's" - Plan, be patient and be persistent. However, someone must take the lead. We all must cooperate. We all must be dedicated to making the strategy become a reality. And we must be willing to work hard. - BJF
