Tutman Road or Tupman Road? Either way it is a beauty

Mini Album

By Ed Waggener

Yesterday, we completed, for me, Bucket List item No. Something - to get a picture of a sign which has been up for decades with what likely is a typo: Tutman Road on Highway 55 South Road, near the Zion Community. It's not an easy place to stop, but Sunday, July 27, 2015, we decided to pull in the little lane and get the photo. It felt intrusive to drive it. The cows didn't mind, but iit's like a private drive.

The spelling is the official one, according to 911 Supervisor Jason Upchurch, and, he said, for .27 miles, it is a county maintained road. In all likelihood, the road was meant to honor the family which spells the name Tupman, with a "P," though there seems to be an equal division when the name is spoken, among those, who pronounce the name "Tut-man" and those who say "Tup-man." Along the way, simply trying to find a turnaround, we took a few photos, three of which are posted. - Ed & Linda

Scenic Adair County: Tutman Road

2015-07-27 - Photo by Ed Waggener, CM photo.
Off Highway 55 South, one has the option to explore "Tutman" Road. Quite possibly, this is a decades old typo. There are, of course, people in the U.S. who spell their names "Tutman." But around here, it's been "Tupman," since as long as most old-timers can remember. But would it be worth the $80 cost to the county to replace it? Either way, the little byway is one a pretty country lane. The view is looking north, where just over the hill there is another of those picturesque farm scenes which make Adair County such a special place. -EW

These peaceful cows were using the shade protection of the old Cedar tree in the heat and humidity of Sunday afternoon, July 26, 2015. On "Tutman Road,: the . 27 County Road is officially listed with the spelling, even though the road is likely named for the late Charlie Tupman. - EW
