ACHS is exploring possibility of Cosmetology career pathway

Would offer both Nail Tech and Hairdressing

By Alan W. Reed, Supt., Adair County Schools

Adair County High School is now seriously looking at the possibility of adding Cosmetology as an additional Career Pathway. Last year the program was added at Casey County High School in Liberty, KY, with over 64 young women (and men) participating.

Just recently a group from ACHS, including Career Counselor Robin Loy, visited CCHSS and observed the classes. Students can earn state certfications in both Nail Tech and Hairdressing.

Superintendent Marion Sowder communicated this morning about the strong interest in the program and how students can begin successful careers when they pass the required state exams.

While not a technology-based program, cosmetology students focus on human anatomy, skin, communicable diseases. Of course, the real strong emphasis in the field of Cosmetology is on "hands-on" learning.

Russell County and Metcalfe County are also preparing to add Cosmetology as a Career Pathway at their high schools.

I am excited about the possibility of ACHS adding Cosmetology and perhaps forming another partnership with an area college or university or tech school to be able to offer the program.
