Thoughts at graduation: Beginning of a lifetime of learning We celebrate with this year's ACHS seniors, knowing they are likely the best prepared in history for college or careers. Graduation is also time for a reality check. The world's economy, based highly on technology, is changing so rapidly it is very difficult to look beyond 5 years out. This graduating class will constantly be re-tooling and re-inventing themselves throughout their lifetimes . . . For the sake of future graduating classes I urge all of Adair County to join me and think BIG! - ALAN W. REED Photo at left courtesy Adair Co. Board of Education. Click on photo or headline for complete commentary By Alan W. Reed, Superintendent Adair County Schools, 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY As we wrap up another school year I would have to say this has been one of our most memorable endings, ever. On Tuesday ACHS students participated in bittersweet graduation "walk-throughs" at each of our four schools. There were signs designed by elementary students, "high-five's" at the middle school and plenty of hugs and tears from the students' teachers, both past and present. We celebrate with this year's ACHS seniors, knowing they are likely the best prepared in history for college or careers. Graduation is also time for a reality check. The world's economy, based highly on technology, is changing so rapidly it is very difficult to look beyond 5 years out. This graduating class will constantly be re-tooling and re-inventing themselves throughout their lifetimes. All this sounds very foreign to many of us, but it is the new reality. In the last three years Adair countians have witnessed a major shift in direction at Adair County High School. For most of its life ACHS was designed around the concept that "everybody is going to college". Then, the world changed around us to a new Career Readiness model built around a Career Readiness Model where technical skills are the "NEW COOL", and we were a bit behind the times. We have been rapidly switching the direction to College or Career Ready. There are now 40 Career Pathways at ACHS besides college. These pathways will need to be focused on emerging technologies and remain fluid. Students, parents and community must realize that there will continue to be jobs and opportunity if our students have the right skill set. I am pleased to report that our 2015 graduates have had two years of training in Leadership, beginning with "soft skills" that businesses and industries are looking for. They know how to look people in the eye, create a resume, shake hands, and how to sell themselves. And they have learned to practice Dr. Stephen Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People." The Adair County School District cannot afford sit and wait. We will need student input and community input regarding how we can do a better job preparing our graduates to succeed in a rapidly changing workforce. For the sake of future graduating classes I urge all of Adair County to join me and think BIG! Alan W.
