Fish kill in Russell Creek reported on Sun 17 May 2015 Fish & Wildlife Enforcement Officer says suspect source is known, but would pinpoint locality only to "south of Columbia." Says evidence being analyzed in Frankfort and will be present to the Adair County Attorney for possible action Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story An investigation into the source of a fish kill reported on Russell Creek yesterday after, Sunday, 17 May 2015, may have been solved. It has not yet been officially confirmed, but Fish & Wildlife Officer John Harris said that they believe the fish died because of lack of oxygen, that the suspected source of the cause is known but cannot yet be specified, but that the fish kill source is "in a location at a tributary of Russell Creek, south of Columbia." The report of the kill started coming in to Kentucky Wildlife Commissioner Barry Stotts, Columbia, KY who received word of dead fish, below the KY 206 bridge at the city limits on Fairground Street and for miles downstream. Species first reported were redeye and suckers, with dead minnows and crayfish, as well. Stotts called for additional Fish & Wildlife enforcement officers. At one point, source of the problem was believed to have been Bull Run Creek, because of the Suckers, or possible somewhere on Sulphur Creek, which flows into Russell Creek above the KY 206 bridge. Points upstream were checked after fish kills were reported upstream from the Russell Creek Bridge nearest Columbia on Russell Road. That is a close as Harris would pinpoint the source of the problem. He said that tests on the dead fish taken as samples have gone to Frankfort, along with water samples which would be evidence in the case. More will be posted as learned.
