Audrey Haynes to deliver LWC Commencement Address Lindsey Wilson College will award 210 degrees on May 9, at the college's 101st commencement ceremony By: Duane Bonifer COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College will award 210 degrees May 9 at its 101st commencement ceremony. The college's 2015 spring commencement ceremony will be at 10 a.m. CT Saturday, May 9, in Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive. Kentucky Secretary of the Cabinet for Health and Family Services Audrey Tayse Haynes, who is an Adair County native and Lindsey Wilson alumna, will deliver the spring commencement address. Haynes will also receive an honorary doctorate from the college. Also receiving an honorary doctorate will be trustee emeritus Tom Carter of Danville, Ky., who has served since 1982 on the Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees. Combined with the 403 degrees the college awarded last winter, Lindsey Wilson will award a total of 613 undergraduate and graduate degrees this school year, the second most in the 112-year history of The United Methodist-affiliated college. "In addition to being another large class of graduates, this spring's commencement ceremony is also a celebration of service to our region," said LWC President William T. Luckey Jr., who has been the college's eighth president since July 1998. "Over the last four years, these graduates have combined to give more than 32,000 hours of community service to the region. They know that being a productive member of society is more than simply getting a great education and a good job -- it also involves being engaged in your community, giving back to it through service and making it a better place for everyone." Haynes was appointed secretary of the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services by Gov. Steve Beshear in on April 2012. Haynes was also senior vice president and chief government affairs officer for the YMCA of the USA in Washington, D.C. Haynes also worked in mental health and substance abuse rehabilitation, serving as an alcohol and drug abuse counselor and later as a community education specialist. Haynes held appointments in the administrations of three other Kentucky governors, and she also served as special assistant to Vice President Al Gore and chief of staff to Tipper Gore. Carter "has been a long and faithful servant of Lindsey Wilson College," Luckey said. During his more than three decades on the LWC Board of Trustees, Carter has been a key member of the Buildings and Grounds Committee, "where he has been extremely valuable in analyzing architectural drawings and utility plans," Luckey said. Carter is a retired executive with Kentucky Utilities Co., and he is a longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Following the May 9 commencement ceremony, the Lindsey Wilson National Alumni Association will hold a reception for graduates and guests in Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center, 430 Helen Flatt Drive To accommodate the large crowd expected for spring commencement, the ceremony will be shown on closed-circuit television in the Norma & Glen Hodge Center for Discipleship, 402 Helen Flatt Drive.
