Green Countians assist at Don Fightmaster golf outing

From Deana Lynn Coffey Parrott

LOUISVILLE, KY - It's a Derby tradition going back more than three decades; dozens of children with mental and physical disabilities experienced the thrill of the game of golf during the Don Fightmaster golf outing.

For 35 years, Fightmaster, known as the Arnold Palmer of amputee golf, has been spreading the sport he loves to children with special needs, but he said those kids may not be the ones who get the most out of the event.

The event pairs individual volunteers with with special needs children, and its creator enjoys seeing that partnership year after year.

"It's a big thrill for me to see the kids. I think the volunteer golfers get more out of this than the exceptional child," said Fightmaster.

In addition to fun, the event raises a lot of money, about $700,000 for children's charities.

The Kentucky PGA Foundation has sponsored the event for the last 10 years. It's open to spectators and free to the public.
