CU Lady Tigers fall in MSC final, 74-67 to Shawnee State

By: Jordan Alves, CU Sports Information

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- It just wasn't meant to be for the Campbellsville Lady Tigers to repeat as Mid-South Conference Tournament champions today. Shawnee State knocked off Campbellsville, 74-67, in overtime to claim its first title since joining the conference in 2010-11.

The Bears blistered the nets in the second half and hit 51.4 percent (18-of-35) after the intermission to knock off the third-ranked Lady Tigers. Shawnee State finished hitting 46.8 percent (29-of-62) and Campbellsville struggled hitting just 24-of-67 (33.3 percent).

The Lady Tigers (29-3) were outscored 13-6 in the overtime period and Shawnee State.

Shawnee (24-9) opened the overtime period with what looked to be a shot clock violation but the basket was counted starting an 8-0 run and Campbellsville would not recover. Lindsey Burd scored four-of-the-six points in the OT period for CU before fouling out and Madison Clements claimed the other two.

Ashley McMurtrey scored six points in the extra period and Shavon Robinson iced the game with 3-of-4 free throws in the final minute to pull the upset for Shawnee State. McMurtrey led all scorers with 26 points on 9-of-19 shooting, followed by Shavon Robinson's 19 and MSC Player of the Year Ali Zieverink finished with 18.

"Shawnee State is a great team," said CU head coach Ginger Colvin. "We did everything down the stretch that we wanted to do but they made shots when it mattered the most. Coming in we wanted to use our depth to get them tired and take over late but they kept making plays. Congratulations to Shawnee State and the great season they are having."

Campbellsville will now await the NAIA Women's Basketball Selection Show on Wednesday, March 11 to see what bracket they will be in for the NAIA National Tournament in Independence, Mo. Shawnee State erased a first-half 14-point lead for Campbellsville and the Lady Tigers shot 30 percent (10-of-33) in the second half and overtime allowing the Bears to make the come back.

Burd battled through foul trouble all day and tied a career-high 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting overall. The junior from Hardyville, Ky. also was perfect from the free throw line, making all six shots and grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double this season.

Madison Clements, who had the hot hand all tournament, lit a spark under the Lady Tigers in the early going scoring 12 first half points. She finished with 20 points for her second 20-point performance in three MSC tournament games.
