Keith Adkins named MSC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year

By Jordan Alves, Campbellsville University Sports Information

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Campbellsville University's Keith Adkins was named the Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year, conference officials announced March 5 at the annual Men's Basketball Banquet.

The honor is Adkins' second in his 15-year career. He also was named Coach of the Year in 2005-06 -- the same year the Tigers won their only MSC Tournament championship.

"Congratulations to Coach Keith Adkins on being named MSC Coach of the Year," said Rusty Hollingsworth, CU athletics director. "Keith is very deserving of this award after building a championship team in this very competitive Mid-South Conference."

It is the fifth MSC Coach of the Year award for Campbellsville this season. Perry Thomas was named Ron Finley West Division Football Coach of the Year in November and Casey Smith picked up women's swimming Coach of the Year honors in February. Ginger Colvin (women's basketball) and Adkins' wife, Vanessa Adkins (cheerleading), both picked up the honor March 4 at their respective banquets.

Adkins has accumulated a record of 293-192 (.604), including 115-114 against MSC teams, so far in his 15 years at CU. Campbellsville 9-13 entering this year's tournament championships.

"First and foremost, I appreciate the coaches for considering me for this award," said Adkins. "This award should be called the coaching staff of the year because it takes a total team effort. I am blessed to have great assistant coaches and they are more deserving of this award than I am."

Campbellsville is having a season for the books, picking up its first No. 1 ranking in school history in early January. The Tigers kept that top ranking for three weeks before falling to then-No. 17 Georgetown College and Shawnee State on the road in consecutive games, Jan. 22 and Jan. 24.

CU dropped to No. 6 at the time, then fell to No. 10 after losing consecutive roads games to two Top 25 teams at University of Pikeville and University of the Cumberlands.

Campbellsville finished the regular season on a three-game win streak and avenged its two loses to GC and SSU to finish 12-4 in the MSC and win a share of the Mid-South Conference regular season.

"We have a lot of great players and even better kids that made coaching this team pretty easy," said Adkins.
