Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, District 8, Somerset, KY

SOMERSET, KY (5 Mar 2015) – As of 4pmET, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 highway crews continue plowing and treating roadways with salt and calcium chloride. The winter storm that moved into our area Wednesday dropped more than 10 inches of snow in some parts of the district and up to 1/4 inch of ice blanketed the roads prior to the snow accumulation, creating more of a challenge for road crews. As a result, roads across the district became slick and hazardous and at this hour still remain snow covered.

Motorist are advised that although some areas of roadways have become clear are wet, a short distance from those areas the road remains covered with snow, slush or ice and markings are obscured. As nighttime falls so will the temperatures causing many areas to quickly refreeze. If traveling, motorists should take it slow, wear seat belts, eliminate distractions behind the wheel, and use caution on bridges, exit ramps and shaded valleys as those areas are often more prone to icing.

KYTC would also like to remind motorist that the following roads have been closed due to high water and if floodwaters are blocking roads, they’re also blocking plows:
  • Casey - KY 2310 (MP 0-0.6/Liberty cutoff street)
  • Pulaski - KY 1642
  • Rockcastle - KY 1912 (MP 1-2/Wolf Cr. Rd.), KY 1329 (MP 0-5); and KY 89
Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 8 is responsible for maintaining approximately 5,258 lanes miles throughout Adair, Casey, Clinton, Cumberland, Lincoln, McCreary, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Russell and Wayne counties. When winter precipitation starts to fall, road crews focus on interstates, parkways and other high volume roadways first. Secondary and rural roads will be salted and plowed once the main routes have been cleared.
