Menton leads LWC past Cumberland with career high 33 points Blue Raiders shoot season high 60 percent from the floor in the win Click on headline for complete story LEBANON, TN - The Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team wrapped up the 2014-15 regular season with a 69-63 win over Cumberland (TN) thanks in large part to the performance of Tony Menton. The senior from Charlotte, North Carolina, poured in a career high 33 points on 12-of-16 shooting and a perfect 8-of-8 night from the charity stripe to help lead the Blue Raiders to victory. Lindsey Wilson (17-12, 8-8 MSC) secured the No. 5 seed at the Mid-South Conference Tournament with the win. Cumberland falls to 9-20 on the year with a 4-12 mark in conference play. Lindsey Wilson came out aggressive to start the game, pushing the ball up the floor immediately after every defensive rebound. The Blue Raiders kept the offensive setups to a minimum because of the effectiveness of the fast break offense, hitting six of their first nine shots in the opening eight minutes. Trailing 15-14 at the 11:57 mark, Menton began his takeover. The senior proceeded to score 22 first half points, passing his previous season-high of 13. He was all over the floor, making cuts, driving to the hoop, doing all he could to keep Lindsey Wilson in the game. At one point in the opening half, Menton scored strings of nine straight and 10 straight points. At the break, Lindsey Wilson had shot 56 percent (14-25) from the floor but just 1-of-7 from three for a 35-32 lead. Cumberland shot 44 percent (11-25) but their 5-of-11 shooting from beyond the arc kept the game close. Things slowed down to start the second half as teams began setting up possessions. Menton re-entered the game and picked up where he left off, adding to his night and quickly surpassing his previous career high of 24 points. As the game became tied at 37-37, Lindsey Wilson answered with a 13-4 run to take a 50-41 lead, the largest of the night, with 10:52 remaining in the game. Two quick three pointers and another Bulldog basket cut it back to a one point game at 50-49, the closest Cumberland had been since it was 41-40. On the ensuing possession, Reco Lewis stepped behind the three-point line and calmly knocked down a three to put the Blue Raiders back ahead by four with 6:38 to play. As Lindsey Wilson continued to make shots, Cumberland kept it close by hitting three pointers in the final minutes. Three more baskets by Menton including a big block on the defensive end helped push the lead up to 65-57 with 1:27 remaining after a pair of Roderick Clark free throws. The game seemed to be in hand but back-to-back turnovers and two quick baskets by Cumberland made it 65-61 with 49 seconds to play. Lindsey Wilson was able to break the Bulldog press twice in the final 30 seconds and two baskets by D'on Hall helped secure the 69-63 win. The Blue Raiders shot a season high 60 percent (27-45) from the floor and went 13-19 from the charity stripe. Cumberland shot 42.6 percent (23-54) and made 9-17 shots from the free throw line. Lindsey Wilson excelled at the rebounding battle, grabbing 27 defensive rebounds and holding the Bulldogs to just 10 offensive rebounds. This story was posted on 2015-02-27 05:20:10
