Blue Raiders champions of NAIA Wrestling East Region Qualifier Nine Blue Raiders punched their tickets to the NAIA National Championships next month By: Charlie Balcom FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The fourth-ranked Lindsey Wilson wrestling team finished in first place at the NAIA East Region Qualifier on Saturday. The Blue Raiders racked up 165.5 total team points to finish atop the standings of the 13-team qualifier. Along the way, nine Lindsey Wilson grapplers punched their tickets to the NAIA Wrestling National Championships next month in Topeka, Kansas. Of those nine Blue Raiders to qualify, eight made it all the way to the tournament finals and five were able to secure the title. Daniel Leonard, Joe Cozart, Michael Pixley, Jake Maupin and Chico Adams all emerged victorious in their weight classes. Keaton Thomas, Isaac Thomas and Erick Gomez finished in second place while James Flint added a third-place finish. All nine Blue Raiders earned automatic bids to the championships for finishing in the top four of their respective weight classes. Leonard (ranked No. 6 at 141 pounds) was the first Blue Raider to secure a title on the day. He began his journey by pinning Joshua Shelton of St. Andrews (N.C) in five minutes and 28 seconds. He then defeated Austin Meyn of Cumberland (Tenn.) with a 7-6 decision, using a takedown with 30 seconds to go to secure the victory. Leonard then defeated Sam Connors (No. 10 at 141) of Campbellsville (Ky.). He built a comfortable lead in the second period before finishing with the 13-4 major decision to advance to the championship match. Leonard met Dillan Schouw (No. 8 at 141) of Life (Ga.) in the finals where he used methodical takedowns to build his lead and emerge with the 11-2 major decision victory and the 141 tournament title. Cozart (No. 4 at 157) was the next Blue Raider to secure a title. He opened with an 18-3 technical fall over Brewton-Parker's (Ga.) Nikolas Kolgakis in three minutes and 49 seconds. He then worked his way to an 11-4 decision over Lindenwood-Belleville's (Ill.) Ty Ethridge, followed by a 3-2 decision win over Nate Croley of Cumberland in the semifinals. In the championship match, Cozart met Shawn McGhee (No. 12 at 157) of Campbellsville. As it went into the third period tied 3-3, Cozart was able to notch a near fall followed by a quick escape by McGhee to make it 5-4. McGhee went for another takedown attempt, but Cozart turned him away and took him down to secure the 7-4 win and the title. Pixley (No. 1 at 184) wasted little time to care of business in his first two matches. He pinned Brandon Dills of St. Andrews in just 21 seconds in his first match. He then one-upped himself in his next match as he pinned Heath McGregor of Brewton-Parker in just 15 seconds. Pixley then cruised into the finals as he defeated Cumberland's Kyle Delaune with a 13-3 major decision. In the finals, Pixley met up with a familiar foe in Indiana Tech's LJ Grayson (No. 8 at 184). The duo had already met twice this year on the mat with Pixley emerging victorious in both meetings. Grayson had the upper hand early as he built a 4-1 lead over the Blue Raider. But Pixley battled back and secured a crucial takedown in the second period to take a 5-4 lead. Then Pixley showed off his strength and stamina by holding the top position for the entire third period, picking up the one point for riding time and the 6-4 decision win. He earned the 184 title and remains undefeated on the year. Maupin (No. 9 at 197) opened his tournament by pinning Tim Miller of Calumet College of St. Joseph (Ind.) in two minutes and three seconds. Maupin also pinned Christian Varner of Cumberland in two minutes and 31 seconds before taking a 14-6 major decision over St. Catharine's (Ky.) BJ Carman (No. 16 at 197). He met Campbellsville's Nate Knauf (No. 10 at 197) in the championship match. Maupin escaped during his down second period to take a 1-0 lead. He then rode Knauf for nearly the entire third period before Knauf was forced to withdraw with an injury with just 13 seconds remaining, giving Maupin the victory at 197 pounds. Adams (No. 7 at 285) was the final Blue Raider to capture a title at the qualifier. He opened with a pair of decision victories over Garrett Harding of St. Catharine (7-3) and Denzel Vaughan of St. Andrews (5-2). In the semifinals, Adams took on Tracy Jewett (No. 9 at 285) of Life. As the match went into overtime, Jewett was hit with a stalling penalty while Adams was still in the down position. Adams was then able to take advantage and secure one final escape for the TB-2 4-3 win. Adams met Scott Stewart (No. 12 at 285) of Cumberland in the finals. The match stalemated until it become tied in overtime during the second top-bottom periods. After Adams escaped, Stewart elected to go neutral during what would have been his down period in an attempt to grab a takedown and win the match. But Adams was able to turn away any attempts and hold on for the TB-2 4-3 win and claim the 285 title. Keaton Thomas (No. 5 at 133) began with a 17-2 technical fall in his first match and then defeated Brett Yarbrough (No. 11 at 133) of Indiana Tech with a 13-3 major decision win. In the finals, he fell to Davion Caston (No. 13 at 133) of Campbellsville after Caston was able to gain the advantage and pin Thomas for the win. After a 7-2 decision win in his first match, Isaac Thomas (No. 5 at 149) pinned Edmundo Llanes of Calumet in one minute and 50 seconds. Thomas then held on for a 3-2 decision win over Kyle Terry (No. 9 at 149) of Campbellsville to advance to the finals. Once in the finals, he battled back and forth with Cumberland's Jake Williams (No. 3 at 149), but during a scramble Williams was able to sneak a pin in at the 4:10 mark to take the victory as Thomas finished runner-up. Gomez (No. 7 at 174) put together a pin hat trick in his first three matches, all of which came in the third periods. He first took down Dustin Harris of Cumberland in six minutes and three seconds, then pinned Giovane Lins of West Virginia Tech in six minutes and 21 seconds, followed by a tremendous pin from the down position of Campbellsville's Marvin Lawrence in five minutes and 44 seconds. But the pin magic ran out in the finals as Travis McIntosh (No. 5 at 174) of Campbellsville was able to secure a vital takedown and hold on for the 3-2 victory as Gomez finished second. Flint (No. 16 at 125) fell into the consolation bracket early and was forced to work his way back in to an automatic bid. He defeated Jal'n Gomilla of Lindenwood-Belleville in his opening match with a pin in four minutes and 49 seconds. He would then lose to Devane Dodgens (No. 11 at 125) of Life SV-1 3-1 as both managed an escape in their respective down periods and Dodgens secured the only takedown of the match in the crucial overtime period to escape with the win. In the consolation bracket, Flint fought off elimination the first time with a 5-2 decision win over Quintni Noel of Life. He stayed alive the second time with an upset over Kris McKinley (No. 8 at 125) of Indiana Tech. Flint secured an early takedown in the first period and was able to grab the crucial riding time point to hang on for the 4-3 win. He then took out James Nolan of Cumberlands (Ky.) with a 5-1 decision to secure a spot in the consolation finals as well as a trip to Topeka as a top-four finisher in his weight class. In the consolation finals, Flint met up again with Dodgens of Life. Flint emerged on top this time as he was able to hang on for the 6-4 win and take third place. Ameer Daniels won his first two matches of the 285 tournament in overtime. He began with a TB-1 2-1 victory over Nick Auxier of Cumberlands. Daniels then defeated St. Catharine's Mario Bell by a SV-2 7-5 margin. He trailed 4-3 in the final seconds before Bell was hit with a stalling penalty that tied the match 4-4 in the third period. After each grappler escaped in their respective down periods, Daniels was able to secure his takedown in the second sudden victory period for the win. Daniels suffered his first setback of the day when he fell to Stewart of Cumberland 3-2 as a third period takedown proved to be the difference maker. He bounced back with a 4-1 win over Harding of St. Catharine using a third period takedown to help secure the win. Daniels' next match would also go into overtime against Campbellsville's Terrell Moore, but Moore had the upper hand in the end winning TB-1 3-2, ending Daniels' tournament. Felix Casa del Valle opened with a win at 133 pounds, defeating West Virginia Tech's Curtis Cox with a 6-4 decision. He fell in his next match in a 15-4 major decision to Caston of Campbellsville. Casa del Valle fought off elimination once with an SV-1 3-1 victory over Calumet's Tony Vasquez after securing the winning takedown in overtime, but he was unable to stave off elimination again as he fell to John Hyre of Life 9-4, ending his day. Chad Lampe (No. 13 at 125) opened the tournament by quickly pinning Zach Zvonar of Life in one minute and 25 seconds. Lampe met Indiana Tech's Erique Early in the next round (No. 14 at 125) and built a 4-0 lead, but Early battled back and secured a takedown in the last 15 seconds to tie it 7-7 and force overtime. Once in overtime, Early secured the pivotal takedown for the SV-1 9-7 win and sent Lampe down into the consolation bracket. In the consolation bracket, Lampe found himself in a 4-0 deficit to Devonte Upshaw of Truett-McConnell (Ga.). Lampe battled back, but a late reversal by Upshaw sealed the match 6-4 and ended Lampe's tournament. Campbellsville finished second in the team standings with 148.5 total points, followed by Life in third with 126.5 points. The Mid-South Conference First and Second Teams honors were also decided on Saturday, based off of the finishes in each weight class. Leonard, Cozart, Pixley, Maupin and Daniels all received First Team honors while Flint, Keaton Thomas, Isaac Thomas and Gomez earned Second Team honors. This story was posted on 2015-02-22 07:29:07
