JIM: Winter of 1917-18 was a real ripsnorter "The worst winter here we have had in forty years" By JIM The winter of 1917-18 was a real ripsnorter. As wrote the now long-departed Cyrus some years ago, "Snow fell on the night of December 7, 1917, and by Monday, January 15, 1918, a total of twelve snows had fallen since winter's onset. Even more fell after that, and the good people of Adair County didn't see the ground until February. And with the snow, came cold--breath-taking, bone-biting cold..." The Rugby community newsletter in the January 30, 1918 edition of the Adair County News gave particulars of the weather: "We are having the worst winter here we have had in forty years, according to our oldest inhabitants. Has been as cold as 18 degrees below zero and now the snow is 12 inches deep on the level and in some places it is drifted over a man's head. Some roads are blockaded and traveling is difficult. We did without any mail several days last week... "The bad weather has about killed our schools. Our attendance has been as low the thermometer. They will soon be out and if it keeps on this kind of weather, I guess no one will care."Compiled by JIM This story was posted on 2015-02-19 07:39:03
