CU Women's XC and golf named NCCAA Scholar Teams

By Jordan Alves

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Two Campbellsville University fall teams were honored by the National Christian College Athletic Association. Women's cross country and women's golf were both chosen as NCCAA Scholar Teams the national office announced on Monday, Feb. 12.

Both teams recorded higher than the minimum 3.4 grade point average (GPA) with women's cross country leading all CU teams with a 3.67. It is the third-straight season head coach Hilary Lakes' squad has achieved this honor but this year's feat was the highest mark yet. Last season the Lady Tigers finished with a 3.52 GPA and the year before that a 3.58 GPA.

CU finished as the third highest cross country team in the NCCAA behind Grace College's women's cross country team (3.79) and Spring Arbor's volleyball team (3.68).

In addition to the team award, CU women's cross country finished the fall semester with seven Lady Tigers being named to the Mid-South Conference Academic Team. Also, Mallory Vest was named MSC Champions of Character with her work ethic and servant heart off the cross country course.

"I am really proud of the women's cross country team," said Lakes. "They excel in both cross country and also in academics and that is something we strive for as a team each and every year."

Women's golf finished with the second highest mark at Campbellsville among NCCAA fall sports with a 3.5 in the fall semester.

"Coach Willis (Lauren Willis) and I are very proud of the team for this accomplishment," said head coach Kim Goodin. "I believe God is first, family is second, academics third and then golf. Our team also believes in that, and we have our priorities in order. I just told the team the other day that I feel like I'm living the dream being their coach. This is just another awesome reason to feel that way."

The Lady Tigers will continue their season starting on March at the Lindsey Wilson Spring Invitational. The Mid-South Conference Championships will be hosted at Maywood Country Club in Bardstown, Ky., where the academic awards will be announced on April 19.

The purpose of this award is to honor NCCAA athletic teams that demonstrate academic success in the classroom, emphasize the importance of academics within the national organization, and promote individual student-athlete scholarship on the team.

"Being at CU and on any team is more than just playing your sport," said Lakes. "I want to see everyone preform well on the field but also in the classroom and in the community. These two teams do that."
