Hall scores a career-high 27 points in LWC win over UPike LWC Men's Basketball upsets No. 2 Pikeville at Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY, Sat 31 Jan 2015 Click on headline for story with photo(s) By Tyler Scott News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - D'on Hall scored a career-high 27 points as the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team pulled off a 98-93 upset over No. 2 Pikeville (KY) Saturday afternoon at Biggers Sports Center. The Blue Raiders used clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch to help secure the win, making six of their final eight attempts during the final 90 seconds of play. Tony Horne tallied 17 points and eight rebounds and Keshaun Mayfield added 12 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Charles Sutton and Bryan Wallace each totaled 10 points. In the first half, the two teams went punch for punch trading baskets in the first 10 minutes as neither team was able to gain more than a three-point advantage. Lindsey Wilson led 21-20 with 10:02 remaining in the first half before going on a 10-2 run, ignited by a three-point play from Horne. In that span, Hall, Reco Lewis and Kevin Bradshaw all recorded buckets. The Blue Raiders held a 31-24 lead with 6:23 left in the first half. But the high-scoring Pikeville offense went on a run of their own, outscoring the Blue Raiders 11-7 to trim the deficit to three at 38-35. Horne took over the final minute scoring the next five points of the half to give Lindsey Wilson a 43-35 lead at the break. Both teams shot well from the floor in the opening frame, Lindsey Wilson shooting 47.2 percent, while Pikeville shot 53.6 percent from the floor. The Blue Raiders shot 23.1 percent from beyond the arc and the Bears totaled a 14.3 percentage from three-point range in the first half. The Lindsey Wilson bench outscored the Bears' bench 12-2 as all nine Blue Raiders that saw playing time in the first half scored. In the second half, Lindsey Wilson took its largest lead of the game of 12 points at 54-42 with 17:05 to go after a Mayfield basket. Lindsey Wilson was able to hold a lead of at least eight points for the next three and a half minutes until Pikeville cut it to six on a field goal by Kenny Manigault. As the teams continued to trade baskets, the Blue Raiders maintained their lead of at least five points all the way to the 4:47 mark when a shot by Macari Brooks made it 75-72. With 4:18 to go, the Blue Raiders began their trips to the charity stripe. Lindsey Wilson would convert 11-straight free throws over the next four minutes to answer the made baskets by Pikeville. The Bears converted shot after shot and Lindsey Wilson answered by driving straight back down the court and getting to the foul line. Six successful free throws by Hall, two by Mayfield and three by Wallace helped provide an answer to the Bears' deep three-point shot ability as the first Blue Raider miss in the stretch came with just 16 seconds remaining. Lindsey Wilson led by just two points at 92-90 with 17 seconds left in the game. A free throw by Wallace made it a three-point game, and a single free throw by Pikeville cut it back to two points at 93-91. On the ensuing possession, Horne was fouled and went to the charity stripe with an opportunity to make it a two-possession game with eight seconds to play. He was only able to convert one of his attempts, making it 94-91. Lindsey Wilson elected to foul the Bears quickly after inbounding the ball and Brooks made both shots making it a one-point game at 94-93 with five seconds to play. The Blue Raiders inbounded the ball to Horne and he was fouled immediately and headed back to the line. This time, Horne converted both shots with two seconds remaining to make it a three-point 96-93 Blue Raider lead. Pikeville was looking to inbound the ball deep, but the Blue Raider pressure got to the inbounds man who threw a pass that Hall intercepted and quickly released a shot into the air that sailed straight into the hoop, completing the 98-93 upset. Lindsey Wilson shot 48.5 percent from the field, while Pikeville totaled a 55.6 percentage. The Blue Raiders converted 23-of-31 free throws in the second half and the Bears went 22-of-30 from the charity stripe in the final 20 minutes. Lindsey Wilson posted a 76.3 percentage from the free-throw line in total, while Pikeville recorded a 66.7 percentage. The Blue Raiders were able to get production from the bench, outscoring the Bears' bench 29-4. The victory avenges a three-point loss the Blue Raiders suffered to the Bears earlier this season in Pikeville. This story was posted on 2015-02-01 17:04:04
