LWC Women's Basketball Wins at Pikeville 75-70

The Bears rallied from 18 points down, but the Blue Raiders held on for the victory

By: Charlie Balcom

PIKEVILLE, Ky. - The No. 21-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team was able to hold off a furious comeback attempt by Pikeville (Ky.) and win by a 75-70 margin at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Thursday night.

The Blue Raiders win their fourth-consecutive contest while snapping a five-game win streak by the Bears.

Lindsey Wilson (15-4, 3-2 MSC) started fast and burst out to a 19-4 lead to open the game. The Blue Raiders went 7-of-11 from the floor compared to 2-of-14 shooting by the Bears (14-5, 2-4 MSC) in that opening span.

Khalilah Quigley was the only offensive force early for Pikeville as she scored the first nine points of the game for the Bears. The next Bear to score from the floor came over 10 minutes into the game at the 9:39 mark.

Lindsey Wilson continued to cruise and built as much as an 18-point lead at 34-16 with 5:52 to play in the first after a three pointer by Michelle Montgomery.

The teams would trade baskets the rest of the half, but Lindsey Wilson headed to the locker room with a double-digit lead at 41-27.

The Blue Raiders shot 47.0 percent from the floor with 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc in the first. It was a spread out offensive attack as Kayla Richardson finished with nine points, Alexus Chinn with eight and Bre Elder with seven in the opening half.

Pikeville shot just 11-of-32 from the floor for 34.4 percent as Quigley nearly recorded a double-double in the first half with 11 points and eight rebounds.

As Lindsey Wilson used a strong start to build their lead in the first half, Pikeville used a dominant run to start the second half and slowly erased that lead.

The Bears scored five-quick points to open the half as the Blue Raiders missed their first three shots of the half. Pikeville kept chipping away and eventually brought the game level at 47 all with 13:39 to play in the game.

The Blue Raiders responded with a 13-4 run of their own, jumpstarted by an Ashley Johnson three pointer. But every time the Blue Raiders began to pull away, Pikeville would fight back and claw their way back in it, cutting it to a one-point game at 63-62 with 5:47 to play.

Lindsey Wilson once again made the shots from the floor when it counted most and was able to push the lead back to the six points.

With 44 seconds to play and trailing by five points, Pikeville tried desperately to cut it to a one-possession game but the Bears went 0-for-5 from the field in the final minute of the game and the Blue Raiders were able to hold on for the 75-70 victory.

Lindsey Wilson finished the game shooting 44.6 percent from the floor and hitting 5-of-13 shots from beyond the arc. A big reason Pikeville was able to keep the game within reach was that the Blue Raiders struggled mightily from the charity stripe hitting just 12-of-25 attempts.

The Lindsey Wilson defense did limit a Bears' offense that was averaging over 86 points per game this season, the second-most in the NAIA, to 70 points while keeping Pikeville from taking a lead the entire game.

Chinn recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Chanel Roberts and Richardson finished with 14 points while Montgomery and Billie Hearn both recorded nine points and seven rebounds.

Pikeville shot 37.9 percent from the floor, hitting 7-of-24 shots from three-point range and 13-of-17 shots from beyond the arc.

Quigley finished with a 26-point, 13-rebound double-double. Kelah Eldridge was the lone other Bear in double digits with 18 points.
